The AGR Testing Laboratory in Delft, The Netherlands, hosted its' first in-person Private Training Seminar
AGR Senior Scientists Peter de Haan and Dr. Clarissa de Lima conducted “Fracture 1: Testing and Breakage Diagnosis of Glass Containers” for a major worldwide glass producer.

To assure the health of the participants and our instructors, social distancing followed the requirements of the Dutch authorities. There was 1.5m separation between tables (also during lunch) and workshops. This limited the maximum capacity to five people. Frequent sanitization was conducted and we had sanitizers set up throughout the facility.

The objective of this private training seminar was to provide appropriate fracture diagnosis techniques that are needed to solve glass breakage and other performance related problems. Hands-on workshops to solve breakage problems were also included.

Some of the topics presented were General Principles of Fracture Diagnosis, Interpretation of Surface Markings, Factors Affecting Strength, Identifying Stress Concentrator Types and Understanding Fracture Patterns.

NEWS
AGR Announces New Pharmaceutical Glass Flaws Webinar

We are pleased to announce we will be conducting our third live webinar, “Spotlight on: Pharmaceutical Glass Flaws” on Tuesday, October 20.

This new training webinar covers the visual identification of flaws in pharmaceutical glass containers, specifically flaws in molded and tubing pharmaceutical glass containers such as vials and syringes. For each flaw, attendees will learn its identifying characteristics, its source, and the effect that the flaw has on container performance. Hundreds of photographs will provide attendees representative examples of each flaw.

The webinar also includes a discussion of flaw severity categories (critical, major, minor or cosmetic) and a brief overview of pharma glass manufacturing processes. Trainees will also be provided with crucial information for corrective actions.

Topics to be Covered:

  • Identification, effects, and sources for over 40 flaws
  •  Lexicon of flaws in pharma glass
  • Overview of PDA TR 43
  • Flaw severity classification
  • Introduction to vial manufacturing processes
  • Covers both tubing and molded containers

The webinar is a 2.5-hour live presentation (with an intermission) and will be conducted by Dr. Brandon Aldinger. The webinar will be recorded and attendees can replay the presentation at their convenience.  The live broadcast will be conducted at 9:00 EDT/13:00 GMT/15:00 CET.  The cost is $265 per person.

ASK OUR EXPERTS
Our Experts were asked…

Q: Why do I hear so much about finding the origin in broken glass and how can it be done with a pile of broken glass pieces?

A: By locating the origin, it is possible to determine the type of flaw and measure the amount of stress placed on the bottle that caused the breakage. Expert Fracture Diagnosis techniques including reassembly and microscopy are applied to the broken glass container to identify the type of load, provide root cause analysis and help to prevent future breakage. When glass breaks, it follows characteristic patterns and leaves valuable information as to exactly how and why it broke.
