Glass Container Defects. A new book from AGR is now available.

 The new Color Atlas of Glass Container Defects from AGR is a photographic guidebook for manufacturers, fillers, and trade suppliers that can help to quickly identify and resolve defect problems.

This volume delivers a common lexicon for understanding defects that often go by several names in different industry sectors. With over 450 original photographs on 154 pages, the atlas is hardbound on high-quality photo paper and provides detailed descriptions of 65 defects that occur in container glass. Appendices include diagrams of the parts of glass containers as well as a glossary of glass defect terminology.

This volume focuses on defects related to molded glass containers used in the food, beverage, and pharma industries. Defects specific to tubing vials are also included due to their importance in pharmaceuticals. The atlas will be most useful to quality control personnel who are responsible for inspecting glass containers. Plant managers, sales representatives, and purchasers may also find the guide to be helpful in assessing the severity of a particular defect.

The cost is $225.00 USD, which includes sales tax or 225 Euros excluding VAT in Europe. We are pleased to announce…

Dominic Baker has joined the AGR Testing Laboratory in Butler, PA as a Research Engineer.  Dominic’s main areas of responsibility will include fracture analysis, container testing, filling line audits and seminar instruction.

Dominic has experience as a Mechanical Engineer with a glass processing equipment manufacturer. He obtained his B.S.M.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Grove City College.

AGR to share internal technical papers and background research

During a recent investigation into AGR archived research files for background data, semi-retired Senior Scientist Gary Smay uncovered several fascinating internal documents which were never published but were used at the time of their respective projects. He recognized that they provide valuable insight into how a few of today’s industry standards were set and testing procedures established.  Most of the legacy documents, which begin in the 1930’s and extend through the turn of the 21st century, are the original typed documents.  Gary, with the help of our summer intern, Nate Bellis, set about the task of scanning and organizing this vast wealth of information.

The first internal document we are sharing is entitled “Principles of Thermal Shock Testing”, written July 11, 1958 by AGR founder Dr. Frank Preston.  The paper provides his summary of the foundation for establishing testing methods for thermal shock. It addresses temperature differentials, test duration, choice of liquid and handling. Click HERE to download this document in its original form.

As a preview, the next paper we will release is entitled “Development of Distasteful Flavor in Beer” written Oct 30, 1944.  It reveals an interesting approach to determining how light and glass color effect taste and whether that effect was discernable to inexperienced beer-drinkers.

We were asked...
If a pharmaceutical glass vial fails due to impact does this mean the vial is defective?

Answer:
Not necessarily. In order for breakage to occur there must be both an applied force (such as impact, squeeze, vertical load, internal pressure) and a flaw to act as the origin.  If the applied force (regardless of the exact type) is excessive, even a commercial quality vial will fail.

Thus, an impact failure of a vial does not automatically indicate it is defective. A thorough fracture analysis will confirm the root cause of the failure.
