Information, News, and Knowledge from Shrewsbury Elementary
April has officially arrived at Shrewsbury!  Our PSSAs start tomorrow, but we are not worried!  We do not want our students to be anxious about these tests as we know they are prepared for what they will see.  The children have worked hard all year on high-quality lessons prepared by the excellent teachers here at Shrewsbury, and we have no doubt this will show on the upcoming tests.  We have made a conscious effort to de-emphasize the PSSA in classes as it is only one measure of student success.  We look for growth in our students over the course of the year.  So far this year, I have personally seen kids improve their writing through collaboration and editing.  I have seen students look to help others and reach out to friends in need.  I see how hard they work daily in the classroom and out.  For all of these reasons, I am proud of our students.
In other news around the school, we are awaiting delivery of our rock
wall purchased by the PTO!  We are so excited to have this installed this month and I will certainly share pictures next month!  We are also anxiously awaiting Kindergarten Registration this month to meet the class of 2030!
We are still looking for ONE MORE parent volunteer for Junior Achievement.  If you are able to help out, please contact me as soon as possible.  This is such a valuable program and I would hate for one class to miss out.  As always, if there is anything more you would like to see in our monthly newsletter, please contact me.  I hope you all have an Awesome April!
Warm wishes,
Mary W. Dankosky

Congratulations Mateo Ramirez-Snell for making it to the Pennsylvania State Geography competition in Harrisburg!  On March 31st, Mateo competed against finalists from across the state.  Way to go Mateo!  We're very proud of you!
Congratulations to sixth grader Bea Ricafort!  Her poem, “Witches in Salem!,” was chosen as the first place winner in the Junior Poetry category of The Hershey Story’s History Contest.  Her entry was chosen out of about 390 that were submitted this year.  Each entry was evaluated by judges selected from a panel of professionals from the fields of history, education, journalism, medicine, human resources, library science, and law. This is a great accomplishment Bea!

We have a school newspaper!  In the beginning of the school year, Mrs. Christina Iwanowicz formed a newspaper club comprised of 6th grade students.  These writers volunteered their time to share school news and their viewpoints with Shrewsbury staff & students.  Click the newspaper above to read their first publication!

Hello Shrewsbury Family and Friends! I’d like to start by congratulating our last month’s winners for the Character Trait of the Month; Responsibility. Great work Madison Feyrer, Nickolas Nace, Taylor Schweizer, Nick Singh, Elijah Kraft, Savannah Taylor, and Gavin Sober.

This month’s trait is OPTIMISM and speaking of optimism, I believe most of us were looking forward to Spring…. and it’s finally here! While on the topic of being grateful and appreciating the things we are given, I’d like to take this moment to say how truly fortunate I was to have spent the last few months getting to know your children here at Shrewsbury Elementary. Mrs. Miller will be returning toward the end of April, and I wanted you to know that I thoroughly enjoyed my time here, and will always have fond memories of both the students and the staff. Thank you for so graciously including me into your “Shrewsbury Family”.

Best Wishes!

Molly Slenker

Spotlight on Specialists!

My name is Mrs. Blevins and I am the head cook in the cafeteria. In my free time, I love being outdoors and spending time with my family. I’m married with 3 kids & 2 grand kids. My 2 oldest kids went to school in the district and graduated in 2008 & 2009. I love watching WWE with my youngest son and going to some of the events.

Before I began working at Shrewsbury, I was an Office Administrator for 10 years with a company called ExpoServices/Washington. We set up exhibits at trade shows and traveled to different states helping with office work, staffing, and preparing big shows. Following this, I was a stay at home mom with my youngest son who was born 1 pound 1 ounce. We used some of the therapies found here at Shrewsbury to help him through some tough times.

I have been working at Shrewsbury for 8 years in the kitchen. I started in the dish room and now I’m the head cook/Manager. The other ladies in the cafeteria are:

Brenda Dise- cashier

Andrea Hoshall- Server

Megan Ruffini- Server

Judy Koller- Dishroom

Hi Shrewsbury Families! Only two months left! Be on the lookout for lots of PTO materials to be coming home over the next couple of weeks as May brings us lots of PTO activities including Muffins with Mom, Grandpals Day, Donuts with Dad, the Scholastic Book Fair, and Artist in Residence.

I want to highlight our Artist in Residence program this year. We are very excited to have David Lynch join us for the entire month of May! We will need 1-2 parent volunteers from 9-12 each day (except May 17th, 25th and 29th) to help our students make and construct a cardboard sculpture of the underground railroad within York County. You can check out one of his other York-themed projects on www.flipsidepa.com. A sign up genius will be distributed for volunteer sign ups.

April is a little calm before the storm but we do have a meeting on April 19th at 6:30pm which will include time devoted to planning our May activities, receiving a financial report from the district CFO, and consideration of anyone that would like to join the PTO Board for the 2017/2018 school year. We will have babysitting available in the gym so please plan to attend.

April and May also includes lots of field trips and we are happy to support our families by contributing to the reduction of field trip expenses. Please reach out to Mrs. Dankosky or Michelle Chopper if you have any questions on additional assistance for field trips.
