Principal's Message

Now that Fall is officially upon us and the first break is at the end of the month, we have a busy month of November ahead of us. We recently completed the first marking period. I cannot believe we are starting marking period two! Our Fall sports just finished and we are getting ready for the Winter season of boys' and girls' basketball and boys' wrestling.

November is the month for American Education Week visitation, Parent-Teacher Conferences and a few other events. Those events are listed below.

Picture retake is Thursday, November 3rd. Any students wishing to have their pictures retaken will need to return their previous pictures to the photographer. Any student that did not have their pictures taken in September can pick up a form in the main office.

American Education Week visitations are November 14th and November 15th from 8:30 - 2:30 pm. We hope that you are able to visit the middle school and see the outstanding instruction occurring in our classrooms. We will ask that you have your identification ready to show the office staff prior to entering our building. This will expedite the process to provide you with a visitors badge.

The fundraiser pick-up is on Thursday, November 17th from 3:00-5:00 pm in the middle school lobby. If you cannot pick it up during this time, please contact Mrs. Bowers at 717-235-4811 extension 3252 to set up a time for pick up.

Parent-teacher Conferences will be held at SMS on Monday, November 21st from 3:00 pm – 7:45 pm and Tuesday, November 22nd from 8:00 am – 6:45 pm.  Conferences can be arranged with any of your child's teachers or counselors, as well as the school nurse, librarian or any of the administrators.  The conference period for each student's parents will be 15 minutes in duration.  If you would like to schedule any conferences during this time, please contact the Guidance Office at (717) 235-4811 Extension 3272 from 8:00 am - 2:45 pm, Monday through Friday or by email or You may also complete the form on the second page of this newsletter under Parent/Teacher Conferences.  (Please be aware that no forms will be sent home.)

All Southern York County School District's schools will be closed from Wednesday, November 23rd - Monday, November 28th. School will resume on Tuesday, November 29th.

As always, please be sure to reach out to your child's teacher if you have any concerns or questions about their grades.

Have a great month of November!

On Monday, May 15th, 2017, the seventh grade will be traveling to Washington,   D. C. to tour the National Museum of Natural History and the American History Museum.  We are in need of parent chaperones for this trip.  If you are interested in being a chaperone, and you have your clearances, (or plan on getting your clearances) please email Ms. Heather Schoemaker ( or Mrs. Linda Hershner (  We are looking forward to a fabulous day in D.C.

As the days get shorter and the temperature gets colder it won’t be long before we are visited by old man winter. How will you cope with cabin fever? No better way than to become a member of the SMS Ski Club. Once again we will be taking four trips to Ski Roundtop this season. If you don’t own skis or a snowboard that is okay, they have a great rental program at Ski Roundtop. Our trips will occur between January and February. Last year we took over 60 students on four Saturday trips!  If I have sparked your interest, look for the posters throughout the school.

As for parents, if you are looking for a great birthday or Christmas gift, you can’t beat this deal. Prices will be available after October 1st and I can get discounted tickets for the whole family.  The due date for ski club paperwork is Friday, November 4, 2016.
