Information, News, and Knowledge from Shrewsbury Elementary
March is here at Shrewsbury Elementary and we love it!  March brings one of our favorite times of year - warmer spring weather!  We love the outside recesses where our kids can get some fresh air and exercise.  We also need to keep reminding our children that they have reached the time in the school year where they are becoming more independent learners.  Homework, reading, and studying math facts are still daily responsibilities.
Miss Reedich and the Elementary Art Department will be collaboratively working with SES, FES, and SHES students, families and faculty to create a large collaborative mural in the SYCSD Administration Building. This mural will be inspired by the book "Only One You". The focus of this mural will celebrate the unique and beautiful qualities of our amazing Southern Family. Everyone
K-6 will create a special clay fish that will permanently be displayed in the Administration Building.
This project is in need of some donated supplies if you have any of the following laying around at home! We will be collecting a variety of colored plastic bottle caps, and a variety of plywood pieces. Thank you for your donations and being a huge help in making this project come alive!
We hope to see you at the PTO Family Science Night on Friday!  I hope you all have a Marvelous March!
Warm wishes,
Mary W. Dankosky

Hello Shrewsbury Elementary Families! Our Faces of Honesty for last month were the following students; Aubrey Baldwin, Ava Fleetwood, Jacob Mott, Aidan Hall, Chloe Hunker, and Brayden Heaps. This month we will be pulling new winners for being “Responsible”; whether it’s completing homework, cleaning up after yourself, telling the truth, coming to school on time, helping others in need, etc.
Our Lil’ Aevidum “Shout Out” Box is in full effect and some of the completed forms were read on the morning announcements and are being hung up around the school for others to see. It’s so important to treat each other with respect and to say and do positive things for our peers. These qualities are proving to be contagious. February was a wonderful month full of caring, compassion and many acts of kindness! Way to go Shrewsbury!

Spotlight on Specialists!

My name is Jeni Ullery and I have the pleasure of being a reading specialist in the afternoons here at Shrewsbury Elementary.  I have three children, 2 girls and a boy, all of whom attended Shrewsbury. During my free time I like to cook, garden, attend plays and travel.  Thus far I have traveled to 38 states, including Alaska and Hawaii, and my goal is to one day be able to say I have been to all 50 states. My absolute favorite activity is to read on my deck.  I enjoy many different genres but my two favorites are realistic fiction and mysteries.
My day is split between Shrewsbury and Southern Elementary.  I spend the mornings at Southern and then the afternoons here at Shrewsbury.  While at Shrewsbury I work with students in kindergarten, second, fourth and sixth grade.  When working with the younger students I concentrate on early literacy skills such as concepts of print, phonemic awareness and phonics.  With the older students most of our activities revolve around comprehension, fluency and writing. I enjoy working with all the grade levels and I especially like the challenge of working with such a wide range of students.
Another aspect of my job is to foster a love of reading in the students.   Mrs. Enck, the other reading specialist, and I try to encourage reading by not only teaching the students how to read but also by modeling good reading behaviors.  We go into the rooms and teach whole class lessons on all aspects of reading, including phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary and fluency.  We also try to encourage a love of reading by organizing reading incentives such as Boomer’s Book Club and Buck a Book. Once a year, with the help of the Rotary and the PTO, we make sure every student in grades K – 6 has an opportunity to pick a free book through the RIF program.
It is a real pleasure to work here at Shrewsbury Elementary.  I love walking through the doors and hearing the students and teachers laughter floating down the halls. I enjoy seeing the smiles on the students’ faces as they discover a new author, genre or book series. Shrewsbury is a great place to work and I enjoy helping the students discover the world around them through reading.

We also have a few reminders:

** Yearbooks can still be ordered at

Schedules are so busy in the spring, but just 20 minutes of reading a day can really help build a foundation for our students!
