Principal's Message

We are off to a great school year!  After the first full month of school, the students have settled in at SMS.  I am proud of the students continued excitement and engagement in every one of their classes.  As I walk the hallways and classes, the energy of learning is throughout the building.

On September 22nd, the middle school distributed over 500 Chromebooks to the 7th and 8th grade students.  As the devices were distributed, the students also participated in sessions about digital citizenship and the proper care for their Chromebook.  I must take a moment to thank all the teacher and the parent volunteers for making this day extremely successful.  While visiting the classrooms at the middle school, it is exciting to see the students utilizing these devices to enhance their learning.

Here are a few important dates for you to be aware of:

  • October 26th from 6:00-8:00 pm at SHS: October Fun Night
  • October 27th: Dodging Hearts Disease Assembly
  • October 27th @ 7:00 pm in the SHS Auditorium: SHS/SMS Orchestra Fall Concert
  • October 28th: Early Dismissal at 11:44 am
  • October 28th: End of 1st Marking Period
If you have any questions and/or comments about your child's progress at SMS, please be sure to contact their teachers.  If I can be of any service and support, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Have a great end to the 1st Marking Period.

On Monday, May 15th, 2017, the seventh grade will be traveling to Washington,   D. C. to tour the National Museum of Natural History and the American History Museum.  We are in need of parent chaperones for this trip.  If you are interested in being a chaperone, and you have your clearances, (or plan on getting your clearances) please email Ms. Heather Schoemaker ( or Mrs. Linda Hershner (  We are looking forward to a fabulous day in D.C.

As the days get shorter and the temperature gets colder it won’t be long before we are visited by old man winter. How will you cope with cabin fever? No better way than to become a member of the SMS Ski Club. Once again we will be taking four trips to Ski Roundtop this season. If you don’t own skis or a snowboard that is okay, they have a great rental program at Ski Roundtop. Our trips will occur between January and February. Last year we took over 60 students on four trips!

If this sparks your interest, look for the posters throughout the school and listen for a meeting some time during October. As for parents, if you are looking for a great birthday or Christmas gift, you can’t beat this deal. Prices will be available after October 1st and I can get discounted tickets for the whole family.
