Principal's Message

Welcome to Southern Middle School.  I hope everyone is having a relaxing summer vacation!  With the start of the 2016-2017 school year right around the corner, I am looking forward to opening up the doors to Southern Middle School for all 7th and 8th grade students on Wednesday, August 24th.  I am anxious to fill our classrooms and hallways with the students and their excitement for learning.  I am expecting another great year at Southern Middle School.  I would highly encourage all parents and guardians to remain actively engaged during the middle school years.  If you have any questions and/or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me, Dr. Len Reppert, Principal, at or via phone at 717-235-4811 extension 3252.

As we get ready for the first day of school, I have some exciting news to share with you.

August 22nd:  SMS Open House

  • The SMS OPEN HOUSE will be held on Monday, August 22nd from 1:00-3:00 pm.  Students will have an opportunity to meet their teachers as well as receive their locker assignment.

August 24th:  First Day of School

  • For the first day of school, Southern Middle School students will participate in transition and team building activities to establish a solid rapport with their peers, faculty, staff, and administration.  I would encourage all students to dress comfortably the first day of school due to the activities planned for the day.  Several 8th grade activities will take place outside (weather permitting).

  • The grade level activities are listed below.

    • 7th grade students: Students will participate in activities facilitated by our WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) advisers and leaders.  WEB links 7th grade students with 8th grade WEB leaders/mentors throughout the school year.

    • 8th grade students: Students will participate in team building activities with their teachers and peers.  Our goal is to encourage a sense of community by encouraging students to build relationships and make connections.

September 7th:  Parent  Back to School Night

  • SMS's Parent Back to School Night will be held on Wednesday, September 7th starting promptly at 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm.  Parents will need a copy of their child’s schedule upon arrival.  After reporting to homeroom for a welcome announcement by Mrs Shick, Assistant Principal, and me, parents will have the opportunity to follow their child’s schedule to meet the teachers.  As a reminder, this is a parent only event.
