Information, News, and Knowledge from Shrewsbury Elementary
Welcome back, Shrewsbury Warriors!  Happy October!!  We are thrilled to share with you the Shrewsbury INK: Information, News, and Knowledge from Shrewsbury Elementary.  As you can see, we now have an official name for our newsletter!  Big thanks go to Nevaeh Dozier in Ms. Erb's second grade class for coming up with our new name!  We think it really shows all that we hope to share with you each month.
October is a busy month for us at Shrewsbury as you can see by our upcoming activities.  The PTO Fun Run is October 14, and this year we
hope to earn a climbing wall for the gymnasium with the money we raise!  In addition, October is Bullying Awareness Month.  Look for a flyer from Mrs. Miller coming home to see all of the wonderful activities we will do!  Have an Outstanding October!
Warm wishes,
Mary W. Dankosky

Fire Prevention Day is October 13!  All of us love having our local firemen come to present their jobs to us and teach us how to stay safe.  Don't forget, our firemen also LOVE to come have lunch with us in the cafeteria!  Get ready to share your tips for staying safe with the firemen!

Wow! What an awesome start to the school year! It was so fun eating lunch with all of our new students. Next time you are at school, check out our New Student Bulletin Board located in the lobby. Our character trait for October is Respect. It is also Bullying Awareness Month. Each week, students and teachers will participate in a variety of activities aimed at showing support and care for each other through positive, respectful interactions. Family Child Resources Kid's Group and our very own Helping Hands program start this month as well!

Spotlight on Specialists!
Hi ~ my name is Kristen Mikita and I have been teaching Elementary Physical Education here at  SYCSD for the past 20 years.  I am very passionate about teaching my students how to be life-long learners while exploring a variety of ways to become healthy and fit. It is my goal to be a positive role model for both the students and staff here at Shrewsbury. I would like to continue to make a difference in the lives of all my students by teaching them that a healthy body and a healthy mind work together to promote academic success.  I am dedicated to teaching my students the knowledge needed to lead an active lifestyle through a quality Physical Education program, and it is my hope that they will share the knowledge they have learned with their family and friends.

In the primary grades, we have been working diligently on moving in personal space so we can participate safely in many of the chasing and fleeing games we will be exploring as well as learning to hula hoop and jump rope. In the intermediate grades: we are getting ready to learn about Welnet which is our district wide fitness program. I look forward to fun filled year to work together, communicate, show sportsmanship and support one another by moving and learning.  The quote for the year is “Fitness is a Journey, Not a Destination”. I will strive to help all of the students to become active healthy members of our community here at Shrewsbury. Feel free to email me at with any questions or comments.

Dear Parents & Teachers,
How many ways can we say thank you?! We’re going to have to get creative because the PTO is so grateful for the support we’ve experienced in this first month of school. We had about
30 parents and teachers attend our first PTO meeting and many were quick to raise a hand to help by chairing a committee, delivering corporate sponsorship letters to local businesses, making copies, picking up supplies, creating the Fun Run Track, and organizing our t-shirt order forms. Every little bit helps! We also had our best Rita’s Spirit Night ever – raising $753! Did you know that’s enough to pay for our Greenhouse Club and Christmas ornament making? Your contributions make great things happen for our students.
We kick off October with a Box Tops collection – it is our largest source of FREE fundraising and I’m excited to announce a NEW way to add Bonus Box Tops. Download the Bonus Box Tops app to your phone and follow the instructions
to scan your receipt when you’ve purchased items designated with Box Tops. When you select our school we receive the bonus directly.
Our only planned fundraiser for this year is the Fun Run on October 14th! Information packets have been distributed and additional copies are located in the office. There are various prizes for individual and classroom fundraising efforts including a school wide grand prize. Last year the PTO had accumulated enough funds to install a much needed sound system into our multi-purpose room over the summer and our goal for this year is to install a climbing wall in our gym to support physical education! We are hopeful we can have the
wall installed during the current school year with your help. Students are already excited and checking out our Fun Run Track in the lobby each morning. If you would like to volunteer for setting up or cleaning up after the event, please contact Michelle Chopper via
Our next PTO meeting is October 12th at 6:30 pm if you are able to attend and find out more ways that you can be involved. You can reach out to us directly via email or the Facebook group page.
