ITC January Newsletter

Check out this month’s newsletter for news about the triathlon season, member news and more...

Hey everyone,

It's definitely summer, and between the rain showers, heat, and 1000% humidity I hope you have all been getting some good solid (and fun) training in. I always find the start of the year a tricky time to get back into it - hard to get the ball rolling after the holiday period, then the sudden panic realising how close Husky is!

We've been heading to Wollongong Harbour on Wednesday afternoon's at 5:30pm for a Club group swim / aquathon (for those feeling keen to run) which so far has been great fun (when it hasn't been storming). It's only been small group so far, and I'd really encourage our members to head down and get together as a community for a fun session while the weather is awesome. If you remember the glory days of ITC Wednesday Swims / Aquathon, you'll know what we're aiming to bring back.

Early in the month we hosted Round 5 of the Billigence Pathways Championship Series. This series focuses on providing young development pathway athletes from within NSW and ACT a competitive and supportive racing series, and has become an important development platform for the next-gen of high performance tri since it's inception.  For me, this event was certainly a highlight so far of our local tri races seeing just how high the standard is at the Youth and Junior levels - safe to say there is some depth of talent not just on the way up, but already here! A great day of racing and a HUGE thank you to all of our network of volunteers from the Club, the Illawarra Institute of Sport, parents, and anyone else who came out to volunteer and support such a great event.

So now everyone's focus has shifted into race season - EE's Tri Batemans Bay (aka Tomakin) and the Richie Walker Aquathon hosted by Cronulla Tri Club are happening on the weekend, Big Husky is coming all too soon, we've got another special Club event happening in February celebrating the women in our community, and oh yeh just saying it's only 12 weeks til IM Oz at Port Mac...

Read on to find out what's been happening at the Club

James Alexander - ITC President
A few pics from the Billigence Pathways Championship Series Rnd. 5 our at Port Kembla on January 9th. Finishing totally KO'd - that's real racing. A huge congratulations to all of our ITC members who represented the region as part of the Illawarra Institute of Sport team, who all races with true grit and really carried each other with a fantastic team vibe, well done!
Our next Club event celebrates the women in our community with an  event aiming to encourage and celebrate the fun atmosphere that comes with triathlon and empower women to give triathlon a go who haven't previously participated in our sport.
Supported by Triathlon NSW through the Finish Lines, Not Finish Times initiative, this will be a free and untimed event for all women (12 yrs+), and is more about having a great time than the actual finish time.
We're also running two session aim at new starters to triathlon, but all are welcome to participate and join in. Info in flyer above.
So please share around to the event to all of the ladies in your life, and let's make it a great morning of swim-bike-run fun!
We'll be running both of our distances:

ITC Short Club Distance - 200m / 6.6km / 2.2km

ITC Club Distance - 400m / 13.2km / 4.4km

6:45am - Registration opens

7:30am - Registration closes

7:45am - Event briefing

8:00am - Event waves start

Being a Women's only event, this is a call out to all of the men in our Club to come on down, create a great supportive atmosphere, and tick off your season's marshalling / volunteering to be eligible for ITC Club Championship standings

  • We encourage all participants, volunteers, and spectators to check-in at race events using the Service NSW app QR code.
  • We encourage all participants, volunteers, and spectators to wear a face mask while in event registration and common transition areas.
  • Follow all other NSW Health Public Health Orders which are in place at time of the event

This Month's Recommendations
A new section in the newsletter where we'll share something interesting we've listened to / read / tested which is worth checking out if your a like-minded triathlete. Think the kind of stuff you chat about on a long ride. Feel free to shoot any recommendations to the email contact in Feedback below
I devour podcasts at an alarming rate, likely more so than the weekly grocery shop. If podcasts are your thing then this is one you need to subscribe to. Greg Bennett is a LEGEND of Australian Triathlon. Just google his name for a run-down on his career. Long form convo's with some of the greats in our sport right through to business entrepreneurs and neuroscientists.
As at start I recommend checking out the two episodes where all Men's and Women's Triathlon Olympic Gold Medalists talk about the impact winning gold has had on their lives, incredible!
Ever wondered how some of the greatest endurance runners on the planet train? Well, it's not exactly in this book. But why they train like they do and how they live and believe in their training is. An incredible insight into the lives of what it takes to become fast. Like 2:01:39 marathon Kenenisa Bekele fast. Read it over the holidays, changed my running. Might change yours too.
Triathlon NSW 2021/2022 South Coast Interclub League is underway. We've been fairly quiet up until now with Club members targeting this, but many of the other Club's in our League who priorities this know ITC is best left unprovoked! As of Round 2 we sit in 3rd position on the ladder, only 10 points behind the Kiama Coasters who lead the series. Check the Series Leaders table here.
Key races for us will be Husky Long Course and Tri The Gong Sprint, and remember double points are up for grabs at the NSW Club Championships! Lets see if we can max out our points at this round and bring it home this year.
