Summer Edition 2018

Hello and Welcome

Dear Members,

Welcome to your summer 2018 edition of the Oxford Section newsletter.

We have had a very busy year so far with trip to Andalusia and the Isle of Man, several SNR’s to various places, and of course the regular Sunday runs all of which are covered every month in The Journal  the official BMW Magazine.

Additionally, our calendar continues unabated taking advantage of the glorious weather we are experiencing, with ride outs, SNR’s, ACU National Rally checkpoint at Carterton and bike nights galore ...

We are also making substantial progress with our sat nav users group with the first of a number of touch and feel sessions being held with local dealers, the first of which was at Bahnstormer in Maidenhead and a very successful event too!

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the members who take on the tasks that make the club the enjoyable experience that it is from leading ride outs, helping set up the gazebo at bike nights to the thousand and one things that need doing, a very heartfelt thank you.

The newsletter team wishes you a very safe and enjoyable summer

Dave Tomlinson
Social Secretary

Meet The Member - Dave Shanks

To say that Dave Shanks is an experienced motorcyclist is a bit of an understatement. For many years he has been one of our most active members, regularly helping to organise events and taking part in them. It's quite a surprise that Matron still allows him out to play.

Backseat Riding – On The Back of The BMW R1200 GS/GSA!

One of the great strength of BMW motorcycles has always been that they are engineered to take two people in comfort, together with plenty of luggage. The BMW R1200 GS/GSA is the most popular motorcycle in the UK and here for the first time we bring you the view from the pillion seat - Backseat Riding a report by Catherine Moxey and contributors.

Pillioness.com

We found this interesting website recently: Pillioness: Women Love Motorcycles Too! The site is written by a New Zealander, Liz Hardy and claims to be the ONLY motorcycle blog written from the back seat. Liz is a good writer and photographer and there are some entertaining articles from the pillion point of view. (Note for those riders that have not tried riding pillion recently it is MUCH harder than just riding the bike!).

Facebook for Motorcyclists!

Social media is an integral part of our lives for many of us in the 21stcentury: there are reported to be about 45 million Facebook users in the UK out of a population of 66 million, or 68%! In the Oxford Section we have 151 members in our section Facebook group, just under 50% of members and associates, a very good number, but with some opportunity to recruit more members! One of the reasons for writing this article is to try and encourage members to give the Oxford Section Facebook group a try, and to address some of the concerns of members who have not yet dipped their toes in the water of Facebook, and to give them some help ...

New BMW F850GS Review

One of our Oxford Section members, Iñigo Ys Mln, has recently reviewed the new BMW F850GS for his motorcycle blog: It's Riding Time. In summary Iñigo thought the F850GS was impressive: "It's not a R1200GS but it's not that far from it anymore. The new BMW F850GS now incorporates most of the technology its big sister has, which will make many people like me who ride solo, rethink the bike we ride". You can read the full F850GS review on It's Riding Time.

Pit Stop - Places to eat and drink

What helps make the Touchdown Cafe more than a great place, for food, is that the cafe has a large patio area facing the taxiway of the airfield so that you can watch the aircraft taking off and landing.  Click Read More for details ...
