It's looking like a bumper year of events again for the city centre - packed with great opportunities for businesses to attract new customers and visitors through their doors.

A busy March sees the Outlines Festival offer live music at venues across the city this Friday and Saturday and hot on its heels the Global Village Market then Sheffield Beer Week from March 13 to 19.

The Big White Tent will be on Fargate from March 15 as part of the St Patrick's Day celebrations and Classical Sheffield will offer three days of music from March 17. With funding from Sheffield BID, Classical Sheffield offers  visitors an opportunity to wind their way around the city on a tuneful treasure trail through some of its best venues.

This year,
March 17 also sees the start of Outdoor City Weekender - a celebration of life in the great outdoors. There's a whole line up of events for runners, walkers, climbers - and for spectators too.

The Outdoor City Weekender also includes the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival
. The films feature top athletes and cover the full spectrum of outdoor sports: from running, climbing, biking, skiing, surfing, kayaking - and everything in between.

An exciting new addition to this year’s festival will be a 100-seater mobile cinema.

The new mobile cinema has been backed by Sheffield BID's Alive After Five campaign, and will help attract even more visitors to the festival, which has grown year-on-year over the past 12 years.

BID Manager Diane Jarvis said: "The great line-up of events in the year ahead present a wealth of opportunities for city centre businesses.

"We are really pleased to be supporting events like Classical Sheffield, the Adventure Film Festival and Cliffhanger in July - they all bring people into the city centre.

"Last year there were 35,000 visitors to Cliffhanger and many of them new to Sheffield. Our chance to showcase everything this great city has to offer."

Other city centre events coming up this year include:
  • World snooker - April 15 to 19
  • Food Festival - May 27 to 29
  • BBC Music Day - June 9
  • Cliffhanger - July 7 to 9
  • Tramlines - July 21 to 23
  • Special Olympics - August 5 to 12.

The BID’s second spring clean is about to begin in Sheffield City Centre. The annual campaign will once again proactively target city centre grot spots with a purge on graffiti affecting commercial properties in the BID area.

Sheffield BID Manager Diane Jarvis said: “Cleaning up unwelcome graffiti makes a big difference – it shows the city cares about how it looks – and it helps to make the centre a better place for those who live and work within it. It is an important part of showing our best side to visitors. It’s a big problem that needs to be addressed, not only through cleaning it up, but through crime prevention measures and restorative justice.”

The BID evidences all  graffiti vandalism that it cleans up to South Yorkshire Police to assist with future prosecutions.  The BID also deploys a Crime Reduction Officer to support affected businesses in reviewing their CCTV cameras, security lighting and signage.

Landlords and tenants of private commercial properties in the City Centre affected by graffiti can add these to the BID Spring Clean schedule. The service is free of charge to BID levy payers. Non-levy payers can access the service at a subsidised cost.

Thanks to our Healthy High Street partners and independent stores who are helping to distribute 10,000 free credit card defender sleeves to customers to highlight fraud prevention. The special sleeves for contactless credit and debit cards contain blocking technology to help protect against card details being read. While there is no indication of a problem with this type of crime in Sheffield, the sleeves are a great opportunity to highlight the importance of fraud prevention. Participating businesses include M&S, Wilco, Virgin Money, Theatre Delicatessen, vintage clothing retailer A New Shop and Cubana restaurant.
