Cyclocross Nationals

Sorellas Finish Strong

Earlier this month, the Southeast had an amazing cycling opportunity when the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC hosted the 2016 Cyclocross Nationals.  Not only was it a chance to race at the national level, but fun to watch others race, cheer, heckle, and enjoy the many spectacular crashes on this technical course.  Many Georgians took advantage of Asheville’s proximity to take in the race and surrounding outdoor activities.

Sorella Cycling racers and supporters were no different.  Thursday, January 8 was the big day to catch all the women racing, and it started off with the 30-34 masters category.  Sorella had three racers start the race in sunny, but frozen conditions. Brittany Montgomery claimed a top ten finish and the fastest four laps of all the Sorella racers.   Jenna Downey was hot on her wheel with a 12th place finish.  Sadly, Cambrie Epperson started off with technical difficulties that culminated in running her bike most of her second (and last) lap.  Trish Albert was our next racer to compete in the 40-44 age category, the largest and probably most competitive group of the day.  The weather was starting to warm up causing the permafrost to melt and make for some slippery racing.  The two mile course had two steep run ups, two fly-overs, and rewarding, technical, downhill sections and was declared the best National course ever.  Finishing off the day for the Sorella race team was Jean Miller in the 45-49 masters category.  Also known as the mountain goat,  Jean easily handled the technical features on this course and was happy with her 20th place finish in another large category.

It was an amazing experience to be around so many women racing at the national level.  And thanks to the many Sorellas, fellas, and friends who came along to support  the large contingent of Georgia racers.  Those who stuck around for the Elite races on Sunday were treated to several sightings of  pro racers Katie Compton, Georgia Gould, and Jeremy Powers.

Rolanda Powell

About Me: I was born in Jacksonville, Fl, and recently relocated to Atlanta by way of Michigan (where I discovered my love of mountain biking). Upon my move to Georgia I discovered Sorella and it has been not only an eye-opening experience but also a refreshing one. I am caring, evolving and open to new adventures. The newest addition to my family, a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard dog that I affectionately call Whoopi Goldberg, can attest to my caring and evolving side. In my career I have worked with the local government in Grand Rapids and managed large social media accounts including initiatives with breast cancer awareness and animal rescue. I hold an MBA where I interned with producers from Emmy Award winning shows. My in-depth knowledge of multi-media, marketing and videography awarded me the opportunity to become a full-time professor of Business and Communication for a short time.

Road, Mountain or Cyclocross: Mountain

Type of Bike(s) I ride: A Foundry Tomahawk SC dirt bike. She's the only partner that I've ever had that doesn't mind my switching gears.

Favorite Place to Ride: While in Michigan I discovered the Merrell Trail. The paths were like to that of a roller coaster, a new adventure awaited me every corner. Thesis the first path that challenged both my technical skills and ability to withstand obstacles.

My Dream Ride: My dream ride is to be part of the Sacred Rides Women's Mountain Bike Adventure and tour New Zealand and Costa Rica!

Biggest Accomplishment on My Bike: Finishing my first 3-hour endurance race.

Why I Love Being a Sorella: Sorella has afforded me the opportunity to meet new people who are just as crazy about biking and experiencing new adventure as I am.

January Club Ride Recap

Silver Comet Trail

On January 24 more than 30 Sorellas, Fellas and Friends met on the Silver Comet Trail for a 20 - 45 mile ride (and two who went 60+!) Great job to Stephanie Gore and Sharon Martin Andersson for coordinating the event and post ride activities at the Texas Road House.

Twelve Sorellas participated in the 2016 Ididaride on January 24, 2016.  This is a 50 mile off-road endurance event through the saw palmetto woodlands along the Suwannee River in White Springs, Florida.  The day brought  stream crossings, bridges, challenging trails, biting wind and cold temperatures.  Of course much fun and merriment happened afterwards!
