The Importance of Nutrition for Cyclists and Endurance Athletes

Free Nutrition Clinic

sorella cycling nutrition clinic presented by sylvia poulis
Join fellow Sorellas Syliva Poulis and Suzanne Brockway on Sunday, August 21, at 4:30 pm at Eventide Brewery for a clinic focused on the special nutrition requirements of cyclists and endurance athletes.  This clinic is open to all Sorella members.

Sylvia Poulis has over a decade of experience in the food & nutrition industry where she’s led nutrition research for a global company including conducting research with endurance athletes and military personnel to develop the basis for new sports nutrition products. Sylvia has co-authored numerous scientific publications and patent applications and continues to share her expertise with various regulatory and grant agencies, peer-reviewed journals, and researchers.   After receiving her BS in Animal Science and Nutrition and her MS and PhD in Foods and Nutrition, Sylvia obtained registration and licensing as a dietitian followed by board certification as a specialist in sports dietetics.  Sylvia has been a Sorella member for 2 years which coincides with when she learned to ride a bicycle.

This is an "open topic" format. Sylvia and Suzanne ask that you submit your nutrition questions by August 5 so that they are prepared to provide the information you wish to hear.  Email Suzanne at sbrockway@aiatlanta.org.

Eventide Brewery is located at 1015 Grant St SE, Atlanta, GA 30315.

Featured Sorella

Nancy Marencin

Nancy Marencin completed the Bike Ride Across Georgia and is a member of Sorella Cycling womens cycling club in Atlanta Georgia

About Me: I’m originally from Miami, Florida and completed my undergraduate degree in music performance and psychology at The University of Miami (Go Canes!). Most of my family has relocated to the Jacksonville, Florida area where there are fewer hurricanes and less traffic. In my former life I was a struggling free-lance musician. I still love music, but now I’m a pediatric speech-language pathologist. My career is so satisfying and rewarding, working full time at The Atlanta Speech-School and part time at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Scottish Rite Hospital. My husband, Noel, and I have been married just over three years and we live in a small condo in the midtown neighborhood of Underwood Hills with our two cats Bacchus and Georgia. Funny story, we met bicycling and we still ride together whenever we can! When I am not bicycling, reading about bicycling, talking about bicycling, or spinning at my favorite studio VibeRide; you can find me at my home away from home CrossFit Midtown. I love picking up and putting down heavy things almost as much as I love intense climbs followed by steep descents on the bike.

Road, Mountain or Cyclocross: Right now I am only riding on the road and struggling to keep up with the speed demons at the Marietta Crit every other Tuesday night. I gave up triathlons a few years back (I am a terrible runner). I also made the tough decision to retiring the mountain bike earlier this year, because I found myself being drawn more and more to the road. I think it was a wise decision, as I am naturally quite uncoordinated and have a fear of heights (riding near the edge of a steep drop always made me nauseous). With this new focus, I have promised myself that I would train hard and ride consistently this year, with the intention of racing next year.

Type of Bike I ride: I just upgraded from my old 2006 Raleigh Cadent in February to a Trek Silque SLX. She has been amazing and I can’t wait to buy a new set of race wheels for her. Any suggestions?

Favorite Place to Ride: I love riding throughout the Atlanta area, enjoy the Madison country side, and recently had an absolutely amazing time riding through Asheville, NC with my husband. The Blue Ridge Parkway is breath taking and the food is equally amazing.

Dream Ride: Hopefully, I can convince my husband to take a Trek Bicycle Tour through Napa Valley. Rolling hills, beautiful vineyards, and delicious wines just sound like a little piece of heaven!

Biggest Accomplishment on My Bike:  In addition to training hard for some potential road races and criteriums next year, I’m pushing myself towards completing the 3 Gap Fifty this fall for the first time. While I haven’t conquered those climbs just yet, I am proud of myself for putting in the miles and hours on my bike and committing to completing the ride. Talk to me again in September, and I’ll let you know if I was able to finish unscathed! I have a feeling that it will be harder than any other ride I have completed to date.

Why I Love Being a Sorella: Joining Sorella has been a wonderful experience filled with amazing and inspiring women, from whom I have learned so much. I look forward to participating more and more in the organization and am kicking myself for not joining sooner!

Race Report

But Did You Die? A Mohican 100 Tale

On an early Fall afternoon while enjoying a post mountain bike ride sandwich and beer in downtown Lawrenceville with my teammate, riding buddy and fantastic friend Laina Hamilton, the topic of the 2016 Sorella Race Season came up.  It was to be Laina’s 10th anniversary on the team and she wanted to do it up big by racing a 100 mile mountain bike race.  Lucky for me she asked, “Do you want to do a hundie (one hundred miler for those not up with the lingo ) with me?”.  Ummmm, yes. YES.I.DO. Yay training partner!!  Neither of us had done a 100 miler before but we were up to the challenge of first finding one we thought would be a good first timer’s hundie and second, training our bootys off for 12 weeks under the guidance of Sorella sponsor LW Coaching.

Leaves From:  E. Rivers Elementary School  8 Peachtree Battle Ave NW, Atlanta, GA 30305

This ride runs the first Wednesdayin April thru September and is led by Sorella Linda Rathje. Start time is 6:30 and it will leave from E. Rivers Elementary School at the corner of Peachtree and Peachtree Battle. Restroom are available at Starbucks, across the street if you need them. The pace is 14-15 mph which doesn't sound like much but the route is a hilly 21 miles. It is not a beginner ride. You should be comfortable riding with a group in light traffic and in hilly terrain. It is a great opportunity to improve your climbing skills and step outside your comfort zone, with a friendly group of women. There are a few pretty good climbs (4 or 5) and you can take these as hard and fast as you want. We regroup at the top so everyone can continue to socialize to the next climb. The group usually grabs dinner after the ride at La Fonda.
