Sorella Annual Club Meeting

Sunday April 3, 5:00 - 9:00 pm

Calling all Sorellas:  Join us at our sponsor, Eventide Brewing, for our annual club meeting, on April 3.  We'll have a recap of last year and announce exciting plans for 2016.  New kits will be distributed from the January club order.  You'll get to meet our fantastic sponsors and meet new faces.  Food and beverage will be included at no charge. Plus we'll have raffles, including free entries to the Six Gap Century and the Hincapie Grand Fondo,  goodies from Atlanta Cycling, and lots of DeFeet socks.  Also some prior year kit pieces at reduced prices. Look for an Evite soon.  Contact Beverly Yearack if you'd like to volunteer at the event.

Eventide is located at 1015 Grant St SE, Atlanta, GA 30315 Map

Racing 101

What You Need to Know About Sorella Racing

So you've thought about racing, or maybe have done triathlons, or raced along time ago. What's it like?

Sorella Cycling is proud to field a race team to represent Sorella and its sponsors in road, mountain, track, cyclocross, and downhill racing. Team members focus on a main discipline but can also race other events. We currently have 19 'Veloce' experienced racers, and 5 'Allegro', usually in their first year on the team. Our teams are responsible for planning their seasons, usually around certain races or series, always trying to support our favorite women's cycling promoters. Race team members can also select their own races and often represent Sorella when traveling in the US and internationally. Sorella's team is unusual in that members range from age 25 to 60!

Working as a team is essential and rewarding. While road and mountain races differ for how much you can actually lead out or protect your racers, the camaraderie and support for one another makes cycling a team sport as much as basketball or volleyball. Some team members engage coaches, virtual or live, who guide their training. Most depend on the weekend and weeknight training rides with stronger riders to improve conditioning and practice technical skills. The team is good about mentoring and encouraging newer racers.

Depending on their discipline, a racer may need to purchase a yearly USA Cycling race license or get a one day license. This is mostly the case for road racing and cyclocross. Off-road races vary widely from cross country and downhill to gravel grinding and endurance races. Most local off-road races do not require a USA Cycling license. Sorella members are allowed to race in their kits even if not on the official race team, as long as they uphold team behavior.

Sorella competes against other area and regional teams, but you can be sure that Sorella will have the most number of racers in the field! We adhere to high standards in our talk, racing manners, and attitude, as we are the 'face' of Sorella representing our club and sponsors. Plus we want to attract more women to cycling and racing.

Each Fall applications are available for the Sorella race team. Applicants note past racing experience, goals, and results, and are selected on those attributes and others. Team members acquire points racing for Sorella at competitions, support sponsors through social media, lead rides and clinics, and support Sorella Cycling through volunteering at events and meetings.

We love spectators! Cyclocross takes the cake in terms of a party race atmosphere, but the downtown criterium in road racing are super exciting watching the racers whizz past in venues such as Grant Park or downtown Athens. Come join us!

February Ride Recap

Road Rides Well Attended

February had a mountain bike and two road bike rides planned.  Unfortunately, the weather interfered with the mountain bike ride, but the two road rides went well.  The advanced road ride was well attended considering the cool morning temps and the monthly Silver Comet ride was very well attended with several groups enjoying a beautiful afternoon of riding!

March's group ride schedule currently includes a mountain bike ride and the return of Daylight Saving Time weekly road rides.  We hope you will join Sorellas, Fellas and Friends on the Sunday March 6thMountain Bike Ride seeing as last month's ride was rained out!  Then mark your calendars and make plans to join the repeating weekly road rides.

March's daylight saving time change also means the start of the weekly Atlanta Cycling Vinings ride which includes a Tuesday Ladies Only road ride.  Atlanta Cycling is one of our key Sorella sponsors and we always have great Sorella representation at the ladies rides and look forward to everyone joining us beginning March 15th.  But wait...there is more....AC (in coordination with SORBA) has added a weekly mountain bike ride !  This ride will begin in April at 6:30PM on Wednesdays riding Callen trail to the MTB trails at Cochran Shoals.  So those of you that are looking for a weekly MTB ride, mark your calendars for April 6th which will be the first weekly MTB ride!

Speaking of the Ladies Only Tuesday rides out of Atlanta Cycling Vinings....Sorella is seeking a volunteer or two that would like to fill the role of ride leader/sweeper.  If you would be interested in learning more about this role or volunteer, please reach out to Angela Barros or Korey Gotoo.

If you are interested in leading a group ride on your favorite route, please reach out to Angela Barros (atbarros14@gmail.com).
UPCOMING RIDES

March Mountain Bike Ride

When: Sunday March 6, 2016 at 11:00 am
Open to: Sorellas, Fellas and Friends
Leaves From:   Harbins Park 2995 Luke Edwards Rd, Dacula, GA 30019

Join ride leader Laina Ziecker Hamilton and enjoy the mountain bike trails of Harbins Park. This ride is for everyone, Sorellas, fellas, friends and will be a no-drop ride for all ride levels with a sweeper.

Meet in the parking lot at 11am to greet everyone and form groups if needed. We will ride the trails on one side of the parking lot first and then back to the parking lot, about 1-1.5 hrs.

If the group would like to ride more, we will ride the trails on the other side of the parking lot which most of us consider a little more "cardio" since there are some longer climbs. This would be an additional 7-8 miles if you wanted to do this section.

After you enjoy the trails, on your way home you may choose to grab a bite to eat nearby in downtown Lawrenceville.
