Ever dream of biking and trekking the Himalayas?

All,
Come join us for some of the most exhilarating and breathtaking sites of the Ladakh mountains and valleys on Thursday August 23. The club meeting will start at 7:30 pm and the presentation from 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm.
Pravin G. Patel will be presenting his 2017 biking and trekking adventure to the Ladakh Himalayas. He has traveled to the Himalayas three times, including to the Everest base camp and the Manaslu massif. Pravin says “Himalayas have attracted all sorts of characters for their metaphysical aspects and inscrutability and enormousness; ascetics and seekers, mountaineers and trekkers, romantics, dreamers and fools. The mountain bikers are the latest entrants to seek their abode. It’s a fascinating place.”
Please RSVP for room size count from this email or on the FOS website.
Looking forward to seeing you and thank you for responding.

Folks On Spokes is in a financially good position for the remainder of 2018

Bills have been paid and more focus has been put back into the club's activities.  Recently, FOS has renewed its membership with The League of Illinois Bicyclists.

A few more major expenses have yet to be paid out this year.  Upcoming, we will have the picnic, club insurance, and, the pizza party.

The board will take a final look at the expenses in October, and, approve donations to the various cycling advocacy groups.  It was unfortunate that we were unable to make any donations last year.

With all said, between memberships, the Easter Ride, and sponsorship, we expect to start out 2019 on a positive note.  Thank you all for your support of Folks On Spokes.

Enjoy the rest of your cycling season!

August 23: Ladakh Himalaya Biking and Trekking Adventure

Join us at the August club meeting for a presentation with Pravin G. Patel on his 2017 biking and trekking adventure to the Ladakh Himalayas this coming Thursday. September 27: Mountain Biking

Join us at the September club meeting for a presentation about mountain biking. George Pastorino started mountain biking in 1997 and immediately became a fan of the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits. He is both a road and mountain biker but finds an advantage in biking off road away from cars. George will speak about mountain biking and share his experience as a volunteer with the International Mountain Bicycling Association’s (IMBA) National Mountain Bike Patrol and it’s work to support recreational mountain biking including the programs for student athletes of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. George is President and Mountain Bike Coordinator of the Elmhurst Bicycle Club, Certified Mountain Bike Guide and Skills Instructor, National Mountain Bike Patrol Instructor, and is Wilderness First Aid Certified, Certified in CPR and Life Support.

October 25: Self-contained Bike Ride From Portland, OR to New Lenox, IL in 30 Days

Join us at the October club meeting for a presentation with members from both Folks on Spokes and Joliet Bike Club that took place this summer. Find out why the bike ride was a fun, exhilarating, and challenging adventure.

Whiting Pierogi Fest

By Al Sturges

Third Annual Ride to the Whiting Pierogi Fest on July 29 was also the smallest—just Joe, Dan and me.  I’d forgotten about it, but Joe remembered.  He took us on a very nice route via Lansing, Burnham Avenue, the Burnham Greenway, and 112th Street, where we jumped on a trail that led us around the Indiana side of Wolf Lake to 119th Street.

On the Thorn Creek Trail at Joe Orr Woods, we saw two rental bikes parked.  As we crossed Joe Orr Road, I said, “When we come back, I’ll take a picture.” But, at the trailhead on 1867th Street, there were two more.

The bikes unlock when you insert a credit card.  The cost is $2.50 for 30 minutes and then 10 cents a minute.  They’re equipped with front and rear lights.

On 119th Street, we rode with two riders who live in Frankfort.  They’d started in the William Powers State Recreation Area on the Illinois side of Wolf Lake.

Here are Joe and Dan at the Fest.

Smile, Joe

Our rescheduled annual ice cream social had great weather this time and a great turn out as well. This year we added homemade Waffell cones from kernal sweet tooth to our regular creamery ice cream . Fun and relaxing, thanks to all that came out.

Fern & Jim, thanks for a delicious and fun time, and thank you for organizing a wonderful ice cream social!!
