• We had been trying to have our driveway sealed for over a year. It was an extremely frustrating experience. Most contractors did not bother returning phone calls. (We hear this complaint from all our neighbors and friends in the area, no matter what they are trying to have done. And then, it’s as if contractors up their price because you live in Wintergreen!) Our original request to have our driveway repaired and resealed was in the spring of 2018. In the summer of 2018, the paving contractor completed only half the job and had not communicated with us (as of spring 2019) about completing the sealing. We finally contacted R Williams Paving & Sealing. From day one, they were excellent about communicating–whether to make an appointment for an estimate, scheduling the job, or rescheduling when the weather was an issue. We are extremely pleased with the resealing job they just completed, and they were cheaper than other contractors! We highly recommend them. Submitted by Sybil E. Martino

Pete Gatje has been a VDOT Adopt-A-Highway volunteer on two sections of our local highways for 18 years. "Recently I turned 82 and decided it is time for me to retire from litter removal on our highways," he says. He's looking for someone to organize a group to take over the roads he has kept attractive. "As long as you stay off the highway pavement, the work is not dangerous. Most of the litter pick-up is done in the spring and fall," he notes. Read more about his two projects HERE (PDF), or call Pete Gatje at 434-361-1309, or email him at pjgatje@aol.com. • News: SEVERAL VERY SMALL DOGS ARE NOW AVAILABLE at the Nelson County Humane Society/SPCA Almost Home Pet Adoption Center. Almost Home has recently obtained many designer breeds. Visit nelsonspca.org, click on OUR ANIMALS and type in DOGS. So as to ensure the best fit of a home for each of the dogs, Almost Home screens potential owners (and builds a list of those seeking dogs) and sometimes does home visits, vet checks, etc. Little dogs like these often find good homes quickly.  Matching your energy level to the energy level and size of your dog is the key to success with any new dog. Contact Flower Vankan at 434-361-0190 to learn more about a specific dog. She can put you in touch with the foster care person who has the dog. Submitted by Flower & Ed Vankan
