Connecting

We are all looking for alternative ways to feel together even when we can't be together!

In 2020 we reached out to hear the voices of all members via the EDN Survey in World Doula Week, and many doulas has the wonderful opportunity to connect with each other during the EDN Online Conference and Annual Meeting in September.

A 'doula cuddle' was held for EDN friends and representatives, to help kindle that intimate doula fire through the autumn.

In this edition our main focus is on our members, as both individuals and groups.

We send our healing love to all in these difficult times.

Doula duo

Here is the new EDN Newsletter Editing Team!

Hazel Tree, the soul of our newsletter for quite a while, happily moved on to other projects and Maria (Greece) and Debbie (France) have moved in.

They met at EDN Prague two years ago and had short but important exchanges while walking across the bridges of that wonderful city and during conference dinners. They found themselves working together in the organizing of the EDN 2020 Online Conference and thoroughly enjoy each other's company! They have recently started collaborating on the Newsletter, along with helping out the office with EDN correspondence and communications.

Through their life experiences, Debbie as a fairly new doula and mother of two young children and Maria, as an experienced doula, mother of two adult children, they find common ground in their love for languages, poetry, connections, travelling, singing and hard work combined with some fun!

We look forward to bringing doulas closer together through our quarterly newsletter!

Croatia: Birthing in the Pandemic

Dear Doulas,

I am sharing an infographic from the report my association did recently for the panel I was participating on for the Human Rights Film Festival on the following topic: How the approach to childbirth changed during the pandemic.

During the March-December 2020 period of the COVID-19 pandemic, members of the Croatian Doula Association noticed an increased demand for support in pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.  Fear is felt due to the uncertainty surrounding whether a chosen supporting person can attend or not and the way the health system works. A small number of mothers who contacted doulas during this period were concerned about infection with COVID-19.

There were two groups in this study of 96 women:
  • Women with individual preparation for childbirth with doula support online and live during birth
  • Women with individual or group preparation for childbirth (mostly online) without doula support at birth

With love,
Anita Budak CD(DONA), CD(HUD)
President Croatian Doula Association

doulas are essential #hashtag

Why use a hashtag? Hashtags are a way of helping people search and connect on a specific theme, primarily on social media sites like Facebook, twitter and Instagram.

The goal of the GfG (Gesellschaft für Geburtsvorbereitung, an EDN doula association in Germany) is to spread this hashtag among pregnant women: our "clients", their partners and doula friendly practitioners, hospitals etc. to get more awareness and support for doulas joining a family during birth without restriction.

We doulas are an essential right in birth settings in normal times
and even more so in crises like the Coronavirus pandemic.

Homenaje a nuestra entrañable socia de honor
Susana Olalla

Inmensas gracias, Susana
Honouring Susana Olalla

Susana is a longstanding member of the EDN and has never let language be a barrier to her attending and participating in meetings, supported by bilingual doulas helping as interpreters. She was recently honoured by Asociación Espagnola Red Circular de Doulas, the Spanish doula network association.

Last February we decided our general meeting (Asociación Española Red Circular de Doulas) would be face-to-face and held at Arroyo de la Miel (Malaga), the home of our beloved and admired partner Susana Olalla, because we wanted to pay tribute to her and offer her the surprise of naming her our honorary member.

She was waiting for us. She knew it days before, when she received the agenda, in which one of the points was honoring her. Her reception emanated love, dedication, honesty. The meeting was pure accompaniment, circularity, tribe, it was "douleo de doulas".

Those who were lucky enough to be able to attend, also had the fortune to express to Susana their feelings for her as a figure. Beyond the undeniable recognition that she is one of the first doulas in our country and of maximum reference, there was a deep, personal and intimate feeling, which started from each one individually and ended up being a group feeling.

It is difficult to put into words who and what Susana is, and what she means to each one of us, to the association and to the profession. Susana lives inside us, because when she is there, she stays once she has arrived. Because what she transmits is so deep that she never leaves us. Susana was surprised, received, held, thanked, hugged and enjoyed. And we were all able to share this with her because that meeting was recorded and shared among all of our members.

"I love babies because they are all innocence, and when they come into the world you have to support them. That's why I dedicate my life to them"

"When I accompany a pregnant woman, I feel her baby at each stage of the process, and how it tries to make itself visible"

"In a birth I accompany the baby and that inner child that is in her mother and that is also passing through and is about to be reborn. And so I also feel that my inner child is healing"

"There are women in the world who transmit that energy that really accompanies childbirth, and that is the energy that Susana gives off and gives away. That is a support that no one else can offer"

"Susana is a woman, friend, partner, one of those that you know she always is"

"Susana is a weaver of networks, a role model. She has opened so many paths for us and she continues to do so, that admiration has no limits and any gratitude falls short"

"You are always there. Always welcoming. Always giving and receiving. Mother and companion. Always available. Always present and first. Protective. Because you have built a path for the rest. And I think that for this reason all the doulas of Spain owe you a lot, and we are deeply grateful. Because not all of us have been through  you, but you have been through all of us. "

"You are earth, support, nature, solidity. You are mother."

"Your strength is incomparable. You are an example of life. You always manage to communicate because you use the language of love. We can only thank you for all your giving, because that makes you part of us."

Susana took a deep breath. "I want to receive," she said excitedly to another plane. Grateful in gesture and word, she was all dedication and humility once again. Her energy deeply reached those of us who were able to witness this endearing event, even from a distance and from the screen.

Her smile welcomed us, accompanied us, closed the meeting, and she remains, forever, inside us.

Susana, huge thanks.

New Recruits 2020

We would like to thank the many new Doula Associations, Training Programmes and Friends who joined us last year.

The European Doula Network is connected by volunteers giving what time they can offer to connect, support and inform doulas across Europe and beyond. Member organisations have representatives whose vital role is to help the EDN communication flow between all members and back again. There is also a team of 15-20 volunteers who help take care of office needs and create and work on various EDN projects. The energy every individual brings to the EDN helps the EDN heart keep growing stronger and keep looking for ways to help connect, inform and support doulas everywhere! Recalling Hazel's 2020 conference welcome:

Our Public and Member relations team, Silvia and Insa, reached out to the newest members asking them to briefly introduce themselves:
Carmenta (Russia) was founded in January 2016. Now it is a team of various experienced maternity professionals. Our members include midwives, doulas, pediatricians, obstetricians-gynecologists, breastfeeding counselors, perinatal psychologists and other specialists who help mothers. Each Carmenta specialist complies with Club's Requirements and Club Principles.
The various experience of specialists begins in 2009, and even the most newly qualified member of the club has at least 120 hours of experience of accompanying in childbirth (in a maternity hospital). Our doulas have been practicing in maternity hospitals since 2012, regularly undergo training abroad and improve their qualifications. We also run childbirth preparation classes for all family members, newborn care classes. We offer families a wide range of maternity care at all stages: before childbirth, during childbirth and after childbirth.
In such a subtle area as a preparation for pregnancy, motherhood and childbirth itself, it is very important to find the right person for you. Allied in spirit and comfortable in communication. A good person is not a profession, as you know, that is why the professionalism of the one who will be with the mother at the stage of preparation for motherhood and during childbirth is no less important. We are glad to meet you!

Déu Doulas training programme (Germany). The idea of sharing my knowledge and experiences as a Doula was conceived a long time ago. But it was physically born in 2019 due to circumstances and the right moment. I got pregnant with the essence of my services to find the name that would make this essence clear to women and to future doulas. My personal journey has lead me to different spiritual practices which influenced my Doula life as well. So after an intense pregnancy searching for a name, I decided to show myself and my way of seeing life, pregnancy and birth as "Déu Doula“. "Déu" means God in Catalan and "Doula", we all know, is a servant. Being servants of God, having this loving relationship with the creator is so joyful, loving and peaceful for me. Pregnant women are in this divine state creating life and it is my and our invitation as Déu Doulas to recognize and to revitalize this inborn connection that we all have. Respect is as always super important and every spiritual path is welcome on the journey. Faith and spirituality can be a strong source of trust and strength for pregnant women and for doulas. I love to combine spiritual practices with practical steps for strong results. We Déu Doulas combine body, mind, spirit and energetical work and support the transformation of each Doula so she can bring her unique Doula magic into the world. Doula training and sisterhood retreats are planned in Germany and Catalonia. I am very open to travel and to bring the Déu Doula spirit to other countries in cooperation with international colleagues. Bridget Michael www.deu-doulas.net

Kontakt: Bridget Michael www.deu-doulas.net

In Bloom (The Netherlands) is a doula training institute, founded in 2016, when the head of the organization, Farola Dumont, found it time to take doula training to the next level.

In Bloom (in dutch) is an acronym that stands for Integrity, Reliability, Loyalty, Honesty, Entrepreneurship and Inventiveness.

We have several doula training programmes available. We run a birth doula training on two locations in the Netherlands, both fully in person, with 14 days of doula training. And a (mainly) online version with three days in person and 16 online modules. This training centres around providing the best emotional support with an unbiased, non-judgemental attitude in pregnancy, preparation for birth and during birth. We love the combination of supporting in person and online. This way we can reach and support a lot of doulas.

For more information, you can find us at www.doulatraininginbloom.com. Thank you for welcoming us at the EDN!

From ProGV Project (Russia):

We are the biggest russian school that teaches doulas, lactation consultants and other parents-helping specialists since 2010. We are also the only official doula training course in Russia – the only one that gives a state diploma.

We are happy to be included in a European Doula Network, hoping it will help us to give even better support to our students.

SOUTENIR, PANDÉMIE OBLIGE.

Support, essential in a pandemic.

The following article comes from one of our North American Doula Sisters, Amelie Blanchette, from Quebec, Canada. Please read the original French text here at Amélie Doula.

After several pandemic months, how do we support? How can we be a doula in this crazy world? An update on the importance and some ways of continuing to support families as a doula.

The whole world is weakened, doulas too. The whole planet is in need of connection, of celebrations, the doulas too. This lack, these situations that we experience in our practices can create a lot of different emotions, depending on our experience, our values, our limits, our needs, and the reasons that push us to want so much to hold this space of support for families. It must be said that the limitations are even more present than before; impossibility of being physically present in some maternity units, increase in certain obstetric interventions that are difficult to accept in terms of evidence, weakening of parental confidence, questioning of our relevance if physical support is impossible, etc ... no, it is not rosy pink. These feelings of helplessness, rejection, of being subjected to measures that are not always meaningful for some, lead many caregivers to… let's say… be discouraged. Frustrated. Sad. Tired. Angry.

Today, based on some information we have, I want to cry out a big plea: LET'S CONTINUE TO SUPPORT !! Maybe not like before, maybe not like we would like, but let's continue! It is important. Because parents are weakened, because they are going through a great passage which systematically involves imbalances, universal vulnerability. During a pandemic that we are struggling to control; stressors increase. Their transition, their actualization of their new reality is complicated; exhaustion awaits them, smirking. The couple's relations destabilise. Support is lacking, isolation is increasing, pressure is increasing…. What impact on family harmony, the feeling of parental competence, the connection (Mon Dieu, the connection ...) between these babies and their parents, breastfeeding?

Shouldn't we look for a way, keep going?

Here is what the National Institute of Public Health (Quebec) tells us in its report (in French) published in July 2020, "Transition to parenthood in a situation of adversity: the case of COVID-19".

"The transition to parenthood is a major life event that can begin even before a child is conceived and last for months or even years after the birth of the child. (…) Although having a child is, for many men and women, a positive and enriching experience, all of these changes can be enough to cause stress, psychological distress or promote the emergence of disorders. mental in some. (…) If the transition to parenthood is, in itself, an event that can cause distress, the conditions in which this transition takes place can greatly influence the way in which it will be experienced and, consequently, influence the level of mental health of future and new parents. Parents' mental health must therefore be considered during interventions since it has a direct impact on the cognitive and socio-emotional development of the child, in particular through parenting practices and attachment links with the child. The COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken to limit its spread are among the recent contextual elements that may influence how the transition to parenthood will unfold. (…)
These situations of vulnerability, occasional or long-term, require adjustments and adaptations in the way of supporting new parents in their transition to parenthood. (...) Researchers who have studied COVID-19 emphasize 2 elements (...), namely the importance of disseminating information and that of being concerned about the mental health and well-being of parents."

Clearly, COVID is making things more difficult for new families, let's face it and think about our presence. And…. Between us... disseminating information and being concerned about the mental health and well-being of parents, aren't these exactly 2 elements of our desires as doulas, and which validate the relevance of our presence?

What are parents going through in these COVID times?

EXHAUSTION looms over all new parents. COVID and what surrounds it leads to a lack of access to information (more difficult access to health organizations, priority telephone appointments, impossible presence of the partner in certain situations), a loss of bearings (what will happen to us ??), instability and a loss of routines so reassuring for humans, a lack of critical support (both at the level of the natural network (family, friends ...) and organizational ).

THE CHANGE IN THE COUPLE'S RELATIONSHIP happens for a cold. Or a flu. Or for COVID. Yes, you will tell me, that is always the case when a baby arrives. COVID leads to a sharp increase in stressors, isolation and the risk of violence (which are already exacerbated in the perinatal period.)

MAINTAINING EMOTIONAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL WELL-BEING is a challenge when you are a (new) parent. Our dear COVID adds more; adapting is more complex (rituals such as the Baby Shower, Mother Blessing, shopping with your mother, the official presentation of the baby or whatever are not recommended, or even prohibited.) Stressors accumulate, the vulnerabilities (income, family relationships, health problems) become caricatured. Huge.

Well. Let's take a deep breath. Everything passes, it's temporary. But in the meantime, babies are arriving. Parents go through the beginnings of their family life in all kinds of difficult situations. That will not change.

And the doulas? What can we bring? What place to offer?
How to keep, we who define ourselves by essence as flexible and open, in the light?

My colleagues, the Doulas de Pleine Lune, and I got together. It is necessary, I believe, to be realistic; we are in the world as it is; what to do with it? I'll share our ideas with you, you add your own ...
  • Inform, inform, inform parents. On physiology. Support. Choices. Communication with the healthcare team. The measures in place. Find ways of negotiation, possible arrangements with regard to suggestions for obstetric interventions or measures related to COVID.
  • Invite parents to identify what reassures them. Equip ++ partners in view of the impossibility of being by their side during the birth.
  • Offer moments for the mother to make contact with her body, aim for relaxation, softness, breath….
  • Invite her to explore what nourishes and pleases her in her body… she knows. She will find her way.
  • Create connections !! Feed the connections! Suggest ways to nurture the mother-baby bond, which will ALWAYS be there. No matter what may happen around this woman who will give birth, her baby and her, it will stay. In face of and in spite of COVID. Connections, too, between parents, between parents and their community, between parents and their doula.
  • Choose music tracks that can be played in the ear, stay in her heart and the confidence that baby knows. He knows.
  • Practice hypnosis?
  • Create a bracelet by inviting loved ones to each put on a pearl with an intention? Recordings of voices that reassure, encourage?
  • Organize a Mother Blessing or rituals? In presence, or virtually if necessary, but let's do it!
  • Observe fears. Hear them. Consider what could be put in place if these dreaded situations arise. Find out about the professional help possibilities available near us.
  • Prepare the presence of the doula in prenatal care by inviting parents to support their request with their care team; exceptions possible even in red zone or maximum alert level. Maybe ... if you are comfortable, if you have had the privilege of attending several births ... come home at the start of labor. With a mask. And love them, at a 2m distance. Reassure them… then rest.
  • Accompany more by phone during the first hours. Support, breathe with her, reassure the father ...
  • Present yourself at the place of birth at all costs, take the chance to be present. (believe in magic
