BAME History Week: 8th – 12th October 2018
We are pleased to let you know that we will be holding our Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic (BAME) History week from 8th to 12th October. A focused Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic (BAME) History Week provides us with an opportunity to celebrate BAME culture, history and achievement and complements our work on prejudice, identity and belonging. The children will be taking part in a number of activities, including trips to the British Library and V&A Museum, storytelling workshops and food tasting.

Do you know anyone from a BAME background who has been particularly successful in a given field? If you know someone who would be willing to speak to the children about their work and achievements, please let us know!

In addition, we would like to hold some BAME family history sessions. If you are from a BAME background and would like to speak to a class/year group for 10 minutes about your family’s background and history, we would love to hear from you. You are welcome to bring along photos or any other relevant resources to illustrate your talk.

Anyone who can help in this or any other way, please contact Uz Afzal and Hannah Smart uz.afzal@foxprimary.co.uk hannah.smart@foxprimary.co.uk

Ms Madden recommends - The Flip Flap series

I highly recommend the Flip Flap series by Alex Scheffler (known for his illustrations of many Julia Donaldson's books).  There are many titles in the range now, including 'Jungle', 'Safari', 'Dogs' and 'Farm'.    You can read each book 'straight' as a simple rhyming book telling you about the animals, or you can 'do-it-yourself', creating your own creatures to read about.  These books are great for readers in Reception up to Year 2 - and can be a really motivating way to develop independent reading.   The language used is quite phonically regular, and,  combined with the regular rhyming structure, means that early readers can have a good attempt at reading some of the words or all of the text themselves.   Parents and children can take it in turns making creatures and reading the corresponding text.  The more creatures you read about the easier it is for your child to read, as the text becomes more familiar.  This really helps them with their fluency.  They are fun books!  And, as you hopefully know, reading for pleasure is the most important aspect of reading there is...

International Evening - Thank you!
Thank you to all who helped make International Evening such a success. It was a delight to see all our families and children sharing and celebrating our wonderful diversity that makes up our school community. We were even blessed with the weather (in the end!). It's definitely one of our staff highlights of the year! Thank you!
