Message from the Board

Dear valued friends,
We are pleased to inform you that following a thorough selection process, 2016-17 round of Akademos Scholarship has now successfully concluded. This year, we received record 103 applications which reinforces the need for us to continue investing in youth education. With your support, we are committed to work even harder to make scholarship accessible to more students.

We thank you for your on-going support in making it possible for the Akademos Society to provide scholarships to many talented and disadvantaged young students from the community, so that they can get a college education. We hope you will continue your support in the coming years, and bring your friends and contacts on board to make this even better.
Furthermore, Akademos Society held its board meeting on August 13, 2016 in Melbourne in which budget for current financial year was approved. We are also pleased to announce that Akademos will showcase its work at the upcoming Diasporas in Actions Conference (Melbourne). Please continue reading for more details.
Welcoming Akademos Scholarship 2016-17 winners

Application for 2016-2017 Akademos Scholarship were some of the most difficult to assess because of the large pool of very deserving students, but our limited resources to provide them with assistance.

We received a total of 103 applications - 58 girls and 45 boys. 20 applications were shortlisted on the basis of merit, socioeconomic circumstances, and previous academic performance. These students were interviewed over Skype for a combined time of more than 8 hours; with invaluable assistance from Muhammad Mehdi of Ummat Educational Cultural Organization, KB Science College and Ali Akbari.

Following dedicated work from the board members and invaluable support from all of you, we have finally selected the Akademos Scholarship winners for 2016-2017, among them 10 girls and 2 boys. They are:

Special Feature: Akademos Scholar Basit Ali Muhammadi
Akademos Society would like to congratulate former Akademos Scholar Basit Muhammadi for winning a international scholarship that has enabled him to further his study at the United World College Maastricht (UWCM), Netherlands. Basit was a recipient of Akademos Scholarship in year 2014/15 which allowed him to complete his college education at Tamir-Nau College.

Basit is one of the five students selected from Afghanistan to study a two-year pre-university International Baccalaureate Program at UWCM. He has safely arrived in Netherlands and tells us that he is super excited about the opportunity. We wish him best of luck in his endeavours.

Akademos Scholar Haleema Abdul Khaliq
Meet 2015-16 Akademos scholar Haleema Abdul Khaliq. She is a high-achieving and hard-working student, a natural sciences enthusiast, an English language teacher, and a future engineer.
Haleema completed her matriculation (year 10) from Tameer-e-Nasl-e-Nau High School in 2014, achieving "A" grade in her finals. She has since been supported by Akademos Society to study at KB Science College.
An aspiring neurologist, Nematullah is a second year student at Tameer-e-Nau College. Nematullah graduated from Hazara Society School with outstanding marks. He wanted to study at a reputable college to further his education. However, despite achieving high grades, his socioeconomic background proved to be a barrier.

Akademos Scholarship has enabled Nematullah to enroll at Tamir-e-Nau College where he is currently in his second year pursuing his dream of becoming a 'good and honest' doctor.

Akademos Budget 2016-17

This year we have added Twelve new scholars to our existing pool of Eight, taking the total number of scholars to be supported in the financial year 2016/17 to Twenty. Since program's inception, Akademos has awarded 41 scholarships to deserving students.

We are on track to raise 95% of our estimated revenue target for financial year 2016/17. This has been possible due to our successful online fund-raising campaign, which will be added to contributions from board members and our dedicated regular monthly donors. Here is the breakdown of our annual estimated revenues and expenditures.

We are calling on our supporters, community members and well-wishers to help us meet the shortfall for this year so that we can sustainably support the scholars. Please share our work with your friends and networks.

If you would like to set up monthly donations, get in touch with our treasurer Arif at 0410 948 666. Click here to read more about different donation options.
