Today is Global Omega-3 Day!

Over the last 150 years, our intakes of omega-6 fatty acids have increased while intakes of omega-3 fatty acids have gone down, correlated with an increase in heart disease. Before the days of processed and fast foods, humans ate large amounts of fish and other natural omega 3 sources. Depending on where in the world they lived, their ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 consumption ranged from around 4:1 to 1:4. Thus, our bodies became adapted to relatively even amounts of omega 3 and 6.

Today, that same ratio (omega 6 to omega 3) on average is close to 16:1. The good news is, there is an easy test to measure and optimize your Omega-3 status called the Omega-3 Index. Check out how my levels have improved (shifted "in to the green") since my last test 3 months prior:

My Omega-3 Index before (left) vs. 3 months later (right)
My Omega-6:Omega-3 and AA:EPA ratios before (left) vs. 3 months later (right)
An Omega-3 Index test includes the following results:

  • Omega-3 Index: the amount of EPA and DHA in your blood (specifically in your red blood cell membranes). Higher proportion is a marker of better health
  • Trans Fat Index: trans fats from industrial production (mostly hydrogenated oils) that are bad for your health
  • Omega-6:Omega-3 Ratio: the ratio of 7 omega-6 and 4 omega-3 fatty acids (< 4:1 ideal). Average population is over 20:1! 😮
  • AA:EPA Ratio: level of arachidonic acid (AA), an omega-6 fatty acid vs. eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), an omega-3 fatty acid. Both are important in metabolism and ultimately impact inflammation and overall health

Although my numbers aren’t yet all in the “optimal zone” (yet!) based on their Omega-3 index calculator I simply need to supplement ~2g of EPA+DHA (fish oil) or add a few portions of omega 3-rich foods like salmon or sardines each week and I'll soon be there.
