Excellence in Painting...and People                 Done Right. On Site.
Those of you familiar with us here at Applied Colour know that our company is built on the strength of our relationships. Our sister company, Venger Electrostatic Coatings, believes the same. To that end, and given the new, social media / electronic era that we are immersed in, we wanted to continue developing relationships through a Quarterly Newsletter. But this won’t be your typical corporate newsletter - it will, instead, offer a few peeks behind the curtain, so to speak - a couple of tidbits in every issue that show a different side of Applied Colour and help you get to know Venger Coatings. We hope you like it and share it with your friends and family and, as always, your feedback is greatly appreciated.
Our New Websites Are Live!

After a great deal of hard work, the launch of new websites for both Applied Colour and Venger Electrostatic Coatings is at hand!

We are pleased to announce that the websites have a very similar look and feel and are fully mobile friendly.

Clients have the ability to request quotes, while potential employees have the ability to send us resumés. As well, we will be showcasing our projects, demonstrating how we leave people and places better than we found them!

As with most projects like these, we're sure the websites will have a couple of typos, so, effective immediately we're running a contest….

We will be drawing for two $50 gift cards, one for each website, for helping us find typos. Simply click through on the "Contact Us" button and let us know where you saw the error and your name will be entered into the draw.

The 2 Winners will be contacted via email. Contest closes October 31, 2018. One entry person, good luck and happy hunting!
Did Your Summer Painting Project Get Left Out In The Cold?
Snowtember was an interesting month in Edmonton and surrounding areas! And the first half of October wasn’t any better. Most exterior projects came to a standstill, leaving clients, business owners and project managers wondering when we can get back to it?

So here’s the 411 on cold weather painting……

It’s not the cold working conditions that make professionals like us shy away, it’s the potential for poor results. The cold and varying moisture levels can wreak havoc on our work, cracking and even changing the colour of the paint.

Moisture and temperature are the two biggest problems facing us in the cold weather, and here are the details…

Temperature is the most obvious concern, not simply because it makes the paint thicker but because curing is a delicate process and cold temperatures make the paint cure slowly and unevenly. Latex paint has an especially difficult time in the cold because the latex particles will harden before the paint cures, leaving us with wasted efforts. The application process is also more difficult with thicker paint, another result of cold products. Even spray paint is known to crack in the cold.

Moisture is the second major problem for cold weather painting. Rain and dew are constant problems, so we have to be extra careful to minimize moisture to let the paint cure on its own year round. Unexpected moisture in the fall, however, is even harder to control.  Drizzle and heavy, wet snow will react with the paint in ways that can and will look pretty terrible. Dampness and condensation can lead to discolouring and blushing, ruining all of our outdoor work.

So what are some of the factors we focus on and do our best to mitigate?

We start with checking the ambient temperature (the temperature of the air) and the substrate temperature (the surface to be painted) looking for a temperature of 10 – 15 degrees or above. Be aware that the early morning sun may make for ambient temperatures that top 10 degree mark, but cooler night time temperatures from the previous evening may have chilled surfaces to less than 10 degrees. Alternatively, while all-day sunshine may warm surfaces, ambient temperatures may not get to that magic number of 10 degrees. Under either of these conditions, painting can pose problems.

Starting a little later in the morning, when the sun has had time to do its work, and to knock off a little earlier in the afternoon is a strategy that we often use in the cooler autumn months.  Even then we’re sure to start the job in areas exposed to the morning sunshine, where the sun has had time to warm things up.

Because we live in North America, paint manufactures have worked hard to create products that can help us adjust to our changing environment. Cold temperature paints can help with the chilly weather, being specially designed to cure at lower temperatures, usually at around 5 degrees Celsius instead of above 10 degrees.
Having said that, colder paint takes much longer to cure, so longer than usual times between coats is a must. We can’t control the weather, but meteorologists have become pretty good at predicting it. There’s no point in painting if rain, wet snow or falling temperatures are on the way.

In the end, the best advice is to err on the side of caution. Pushing the limits of temperature and moisture may seem harmless at the time, but by the time spring freeze/thaw cycles roll around you may be singing a different song – and now its not just a matter of repainting – it’s a matter of removing and then repainting – a much more costly endeavour.
Applied Colour BC Is Soaring High!
Applied Colour BC recently worked on some tenant upgrades in the CIBC Building in downtown Victoria, painting out the 4th, 5th & 6th floors.  The top picture is the view from the rooftop where they gave some utility lines a fresh new look as well. We think the pop of red against the white and grey makes for a fun and fresh looking work environment.

Applied Colour BC now employs 8 team members and is growing each month!  Way to go ACBC - keep up the good work!
We Work Hard & We Play Hard
The Boys of Summer - aka the Men of Applied joined forces with several members of BOMA Edmonton in a slow pitch fundraising ball tournament.  All proceeds went to supporting Little Warriors and the Be Brave Ranch!  Brad, our Operations Manager, was a superstar pitcher for Team Green, but sadly was not able to help them into the finals.  A great time was had by all and the Applied fans were on the edge of their seats as they watched Daryn and Rob played against each other in the finals!
Rob, our General Manager, and Daryn, our head of Business Development never let a little bit of friendly competition get between a good business partnership!
In the end it was "Team Orange" for the win!
However, Rob wins the award for the only Applied Team member to leave the tournament uninjured!

Venger. On Site.
This is a new feature we've added to our newsletter. Our goal is to highlight some of the unique and different projects Venger Coatings can do ON SITE with our electrostatic paining process.

These stunning gold and black partitions can be found the in the new Starlight Casino in the west end. They were used to divide the slot machines from the card tables as well as various other places in the casino.

Electrostatic painting is similar to powder coating in terms of finish and durability, however the electrostatic process can be done on site and for a reduced cost.

We work with so many different businesses and hear about so many wonderful Edmonton success stories that it only seems fitting to share some of these stories with you.

Their mission statement speaks to our heart as well….

Together we build our future and our future looks bright.

We love being a part of making Edmonton beautiful and the team at Cutting Edge is right there along with us!

But there not just grass and flowers, Cutting Edge can take care of all your snow removal services over the winter months as well. Their company is highly commited to a culture of safety, not just for their employees but for yours as well.  Offering a wide variety of snow removal and sanding services!

We at Applied Colour have always believed in leaving people and places better than we found them….our friends at Bin 104 have a very similar mind set.  Their staff goal is to ensure each customer has a great buying experience. Whether they are new to the world of wine or a great wine enthusiast they want all their clients to be confident and comfortable exploring the world of wine in their shop.

Like us they also believe in the power of connection! They offer several events every month in an effort to get to know and build a rapport with their community and customers. Our favorite event is Falcon Fest.  Each year Bin 104 fundraises for the conservation of the Weber Centre falcons.  This is a family of falcons that have made their home on the roof top of the Weber Centre for over 10 years. They return each year to nest and have their babies and with the help of Bin 104 these birds are sure to keep returning to a habitat that feels safe and welcoming.

Bin 104 will be hosting their annual Birthday wine tasting on Thursday November 1st from 4:30 – 8:00 be sure to sign up at bin104.com and see for yourself what a great wine buying experience can feel like.
