“You cannot find peace by avoiding life.”
- Virginia Woolf
Ask O’Rourke X 2 Question 1: How do we know if volunteers, coaches and others that are responsible for our children have been Virtus trained and are keeping up with the certification? Are volunteers monitored in any way (by the administration) to be sure our children are being well cared for?
Answer 1: Great question, and an important one. The school has a comprehensive database of those who are allowed to coach/volunteer/interact with the students whether on the court/field, in the classroom, and in any other way during any school-sanctioned event; those who do not meet all requirements are flagged and not allowed to participate. If a parent calls in wanting to volunteer, we check the database to ensure they have done the proper training and are current with the requirements.
Each campus has a trained Site Administrator to ensure proper compliance. Additionally, every year, the Archdiocese of Chicago, in cooperation with the Office of Protecting Children and Youth, conducts an audit to ensure that all schools are in compliance. In response to your question, we have doubled back to make sure we've got updated lists of any volunteers who work in the athletics program and will continue to ensure they are all compliant.
Question 2: How are teachers rated and observed? (This is part one of a three part question - all of which will get answered over the next couple of weeks.)
Answer 2: PFGA utilizes the Charlotte Danielson Framework for observing teachers. The process involves a series of informal observations, walkthroughs, and formal observations. The Danielson process tasks the observer with assessing the complex activity of teaching by dividing into 22 components (and 76 smaller elements) clustered into four domains of teaching responsibility: Domain 1 - Planning and Preparation. Domain 2 - Classroom Environment. Domain 3 - Instruction. Domain 4 - Professional Responsibilities.
Mrs. Kinel and I are professionally certified to utilize the Danielson framework. The endorsement for Danielson involves a six hour proficiency exam. For more information: http://www.danielsongroup.org
Great Job Students!
One of the more rewarding aspects of working with students is when they have the opportunity to display their varied talents. This week at the South Campus, the production of Mary Poppins was a delight; the children performed wonderfully. The Science Fair at the North Campus was nothing short of amazing. The depth of the deduction from a hypothesis was incredibly impressive. The South Campus will be showing off their scientific aptitude today beginning at 3:15pm. Thanks to our students for making us so proud and thanks to all of the adults who helped with coaching, teaching, guiding, proofreading, judging, and by being subjects of the many experiments!
Our "Community" is clearly one of our strengths. We recognize each large and small effort by parents, teachers, and staff to build that community feeling, and we truly appreciate everyone pitching in, especially when it comes to supporting our students. Thank you.
