Dear Pope Francis Global Academy Families,

Welcome, Welcome Back, and Thank You!

First, thank you everyone for choosing to entrust us with your children and selecting Pope Francis Global Academy for your students’ education.  

I also want to say a BIG thank you to the many families who joined us in gathering for our Ice Cream Social last Thursday and for our Tears and Cheers parent social this past Monday and Tuesday. We offer much gratitude to our Parents’ Club for all of their hard work and hospitality in providing the ice cream and breakfast treats.

We had a beautiful Opening Mass at the North Campus on Wednesday for all of our Kindergarten through 8th graders and staff. Several parents joined us and Bishop Kane presided. Dr. Jim Rigg, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, was a guest speaker at the end of Mass giving our students and staff an encouraging pep-talk for the year. It was an honor to have these special guests at Mass. They are both big supporters of our school and send their well-wishes to you all.

As our new school year has begun, here are some updates that I would like to share with all of you:

Music & Junior High Science Teachers- The music teacher who was set to begin this week has decided that for personal reasons not to take the position.

Needless to say, I have been very busy this week recruiting and interviewing candidates for Science and Music and am happy to say that I have had multiple interviews scheduled this week and am confident to have two new teachers in place very soon.

Spirit Days​
A number of days on our school calendar have been designated as “School Spirit Days.” On these days instead of wearing the regular school uniform, students may wear any clothing that bears the Pope Francis Global Academy or ​Wolf logo. (i.e. gym uniform, PFGA sports team apparel, or clothing reflective of the school’s athletic colors of maroon and gold).

2018-2019 Student Parent Handbook
This handbook has been designed for the parents, teachers, and students. The handbook, rules, and junior high behavior policy apply to all school-sponsored events, even those activities occurring off-campus. It should serve as a guide to the policies and procedures which help make Pope Francis Global Academy both a strong academic and faith-filled community.

The partnership of home and school helps create a bond that provides an excellent education with a deep spiritual development. Thank you for your prayers and confidence as we all, together, begin this new school year.

ACT Aspire Scores
For those of you that have a child in grades 3-8, please check your child(ren)’s folder for a paper copy of their Spring ACT Aspire scores.  PowerSchool will be uploading them digitally by the end of August. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher for assistance.

Family Directory
We are in the process of creating the School Directory.  If you have not already done so, please complete this FORM. Once you have completed it, please submit it to the office, and we will be able to update our records and create an optional School Directory. We do ask that you provide a personal email that you check often. We have seen many work emails bounce back due to security/firewall settings.   All contact information is kept confidential.

Forms
We ask that all forms be returned by Tuesday, September 5 so that an optional informational listing of all families’ contact information can be created, and a hard copy of the current directory can be shared by the end of September. The intent of the directory is to provide contact information families within the Pope Francis Global Academy community and is not to be shared.  

WANTED: Silent Auction Donations
The Silent Auction Committee is busy planning our Howl at the Moon Silent Auction to be held on November 17 at the St. Cornelius Pacocha Center.

To make this year’s auction a HUGE SUCCESS, we need YOUR help gathering donations from the community. Here are some easy ways you can help:

Do you run your own small business? Do your neighbors have their own businesses? Donating to the auction is a great way to get your name/product/service out there to the Fountain Hills community. Ideas include personal trainers, photographers, personal chefs, landscape design, interior decorators, professional organizers, artists, tutors.

Do you have a favorite local business that you want to help promote? Next time you are there, just ask if they would like to donate. It’s a great way for them to advertise to local families and support their community. Ideas include landscaping, construction/home improvement, cleaning, yoga studios, women’s boot camp/workout programs, nail salons, restaurants, hair salons, wine shops, dog walkers/pet sitting.

Have season tickets to a sports event and you don’t plan to use them all? Why let your seats go empty for a game? Donating tickets is a great way to help the Pope Francis Global Academy!

Know a parent with their own direct selling business? Donating some products or services is a simple way for her to advertise?

Have a vacation home/ timeshare you won’t need to use?

Ask at your place of employment if they would help sponsor the donation of a larger item, such as a weekend getaway, airline tickets, hotel...if we combined monetary contributions from several Corporations, we could purchase a larger item to be auctioned off. Or perhaps your company can underwrite some of the event expenses, like drinks, food, or the DJ. It’s another option to help us raise money.

We are looking for both product and monetary donations. Thanks in advance for your help and support!

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS?  THIS IS HOW WE COMPARE…

Recently, the Archdiocese of Chicago completed an analysis comparing our school’s ACT Aspire scores to comparable test scores from the public schools closest to us. The analysis looked at the percentage of students at each Catholic school who achieved a score of either “Ready” or “Exceeds” on the ACT Aspire test and the percentage of CPS students that scored or “Exceeds” on the PARCC test. Both tests evaluate math and reading skills based on the Common Core Curriculum. Those who “Meet or Exceed Expectations” on PARCC, or score “Ready or Exceeds” on ACT are considered "on track for college and career.” Here is how we scored compared to local public schools. 

We are thrilled to see these results, but not surprised. We gained 14 new students this summer who are transferring in from some form of CPS school. Word is out and people are beginning to understand the value of a Catholic education at Pope Francis Global Academy! We believe this is an important analysis to share with you, our school families, because we believe you will want to share this news with your friends and family.

Nearly 70% of our students scored “Ready” or “Exceeds” in reading! We can tell you from experience that this is a score we can be proud of. This achievement is a credit to our amazing teachers, supportive parents, and tenacious students. With the addition of the Okapi Flying Start Reading Program and the Wilson Foundation Multisensory, Structured Language Program, we anticipate even further growth in this number in coming years!

Referral Bonus Reminder
The fact is our school is a great place to be. Every child deserves the kind of education, care, and faith formation your child is receiving and, with that in mind, we want to remind you that you will receive a $300 tuition credit for every family you refer to our school who enrolls and stays (in good standing) through Christmas break! This incentive is unlimited, so if you bring in two families, we will knock off $600. You could pay off your tuition just by introducing the people you love to the school you love!

If you know someone who would benefit from a Pope Francis education and would be a great addition to our family please ask them to visit our website or contact Mrs. Thyen. Make sure to remind them to include your name when theycomplete their paper application so that we may award your referral bonus.
