NEWS FROM THE
SOUTHERN REGION
COACHING COORDINATOR

There have been a lot of changes to coaching over the summer. Please feel free to email me if you have any further questions.

  • The Introduction to Coaching Ringette course has been changed to an e-module through the CAC (Coaches Association of Canada).  It will be made available in time for the start of the season and new coaches will be required to complete the e-module prior to attending CSI (Community Sport Initiation) or CI (Competition Introduction).
  • The new deadlines for MED (Making Ethical Decisions) course and evaluation, as well as the CI practical evaluations have been extended to Jan 31 every year.
  • There is a revised Fair Play policy.  You can get it here.
  • 18+ "BB" teams and lower are required to have a qualified bench staff member registered on their TRF and present during sanctioned events. This bench staff may be a Coach, Trainer or Manager, and may be a player on the team. Player-coaches are responsible for the team and will be subject to all disciplinary actions.  It is also recommended that at least one member of the team have first aid qualifications.
  • All ringette teams (including houseleague) must have fully qualified coaches as per this Coaching Credentials chart.
  • Team Managers will no longer have access to the bench for the Canada Ringette Championships, NRL Championship and the Canada Winter Games.  See the RC (Ringette Canada) memo here
  • Coaching Substitutions are permitted as long as the the overall bench requirements are still met on the new team.  All bench staff substitutions are still required to be pre-approved.
  • Ringette Canada will be hosting a Competition Development course over Thanksgiving weekend in Toronto.  There are three prerequisite courses that are required prior to taking the course: Developing Athletic Abilities, Coaching and Leading Effectively, Prevention and Recovery.  They can all be found on the CAC website here.
  • The 2016 Coaching Clinics are in the process of being scheduled and will be sent out shortly.
  • Please read the section on Professional Development below.  All coaches will be required to complete PD to maintain their certification.

FAQ:

Question: What is MED?
Answer: Making Ethical Decisions (MED) is a course run by the NCCP that is mandatory for all ringette coaches.  It is comprised of a course and an online evaluation.

Question: I am a new coach this year.  Do I need the MED course?
Answer: Yes.  You can sign up here

Question: What do I do after I take the MED course?
Answer: You must take the online evaluation prior to Jan 31 here

Question: There is more than one MED evaluation.  Which one do I take?
Answer: If you took the CSI course, then take the Community Sport evaluation, if you took the CI course, then take the Competition Introduction evaluation.

Question: I took MED last year.  Do I need to take it again?
Answer: If you successfully passed the MED evaluation in a prior year, you do not need to take it again.

Question: I heard I can complete MED course online.  Is that true?
Answer: The CAO does offer it occasionally online, but they limit the amount of registrants and it fills up quickly.

Question: Can I challenge the MED course and just take the evaluation?
Answer: No.  Ringette Canada and Ontario Ringette have stated that the course is mandatory prior to taking the evaluation.

Question: What if I can't make the MED clinic that is being offered by Ringette?
Answer: You will need to take it with another sport.  You can find the calendar of courses here

Coaches: Have you taken the Competition Introduction (CI) course this season? There is a bursury available that may be able to put some money back in your pocket. You can apply here.
Effective Jan 1, 2014, Ringette Canada decided to comply with the CAC's (Coaches Association of Canada)  NCCP Professional Development policy.

Every coach will be required to complete PD (Professional Development) points to maintain their certification.  These are the minimum standards required every 5 years:
CSI Coaches - 10 points
CI Coaches - 20 points
Comp-Dev Coaches - 30 points

If you were trained prior to 2014, your 5 year clock started on Jan 1, 2014, thereby making your 5 year deadline on Dec 31, 2018.
If you were trained 2014 and later, your 5 year clock will start the following Jan 1.
If you move from ‘in training’ or ‘trained’ to a ‘certified’ status, a new five year cycle will begin.

There are numerous ways to earn PD points:
  1. Active Coaching.  Maximum 5 points each renewal period.  Coaches need to self declare each year here Active Coaching Declaration
  2. NCCP Activity.  No minimum or maximum.  5 points per module.  Courses can be found here.
  3. Non-NCCP Activity.  No maximum if sport-specific, maximum 50% of points if multi-sport. Approximately 1 point per hour.  Must be pre-approved by Ringette Canada.  Southern Region is currently looking into hosting some sport-specific courses in 2016.  More info to follow.
  4. Coach Self-Directed Activity.  Maximum 3 points per renewal period.  Must be pre-approved by Ringette Canada.
  5. Re-evaluation in Context.  100% of points required for the renewal period if the coaches chooses to be re-evaluated in their context (i.e. CI evaluation)

All Professional Development will be tracked in the CAC locker.  To find out how many PD points you currently have login into your locker here

Have you taken one of these non-NCCP courses?  They qualify for Professional Development!
Send me an email if you have taken one of these courses and it isn't in your locker.
