"Domestic Abuse and COVID19; a Pandemic within a Pandemic"
Dear CFUW Members,

I am forwarding to you a copy of the press release being distributed among the media, government representatives, and our partners. As a Board we felt we needed to say “Thank you” to all who are leading Canadians through this challenging period of COVID-19 and to offer comments on the accompanying increased domestic violence. Please distribute as you wish.

Included also in this Club Action News are updates on the work of Mediator Rebecca Bromwich, campaigning in CFUW elections, the hotel cancellation fee and links to articles and webinars.

National Presiden
Mediator Rebecca Bromwich
Item 4 of the April 3, 2020, Board meeting reported in Club Action News  “Approval was given to engage Rebecca Bromwich as a mediator to generate options to resolve the impasse regarding CFUW membership in GWI and to find a way forward . . “  This morning a meeting was held with Ms. Bromwich and  next week a call for members to form a Mediation Working Group will be sent to the membership. This will be an opportunity to join in open-minded, constructive problem solving for a working period of one month with an experienced mediator. We look forward to your response to this call when circulated next week.

Item 5 of the report on the April 2, 2020 Board meeting  in Club Action News, reported on the ”no campaigning policy” of CFUW. This  has been explained further by  VP Ontario and Chair, National Governance Committee, Sandra Thomson.
In Brief: Campaigning
Definition of Campaign:  a series of activities designed to bring about a desired result (advertising).
As in previous elections, campaigning by the candidate or any other individual member of a club or a club or Council or other group is not allowed.
All nomination information is handled by the Nominations Committee in conjunction with the National Office and disseminated by the latter at the same time to everyone.  There is no need for further communications or information to be disseminated. The information on the website for each candidate is the only information allowed.  What has been accepted by the Nominations Committee speaks for the candidate.

  • “No campaigning” means there will be no series of activities or platforms or use of the National Directory to engage in self-promotion by the candidate, or by an individual in support of a particular candidate or by a supporting club for a particular candidate, or by any provincial council or group.
  • There are no misleading or misrepresentational statements in the application form
  • Candidates must not bring up their candidacy but if asked privately by any means must direct her position.
  • Candidates who already have a leadership role in CFUW are expected to fulfil the duties of that position but to be mindful of the no campaigning policy.
A more detailed policy is forthcoming to the membership.

Unfortunately, the cancellation fee being charged CFUW by the hotel originally booked for the 2020 AGM is $70,000 and not  $7000 as reported earlier "with a missing zero." We are steadfast in stating that COVID19 has made it unsafe to meet in person with such a large group in mid-June, and that there are strong grounds for dismissing the cancellation fee.
