Jesus began his mission to the world by calling disciples. He began by calling people to come and learn from him the ways of God’s kingdom, and to learn the meaning of everything that he would do, specifically the meaning of his death and resurrection.
Jesus ended his earthly ministry by commissioning his first disciples to go and make more disciples and to teach them everything they had learned from and about Jesus. And between his calling and his commissioning is Jesus’ teaching, which the Gospel of Matthew says begins with the “Beatitudes”.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”    -Matthew 5:3-12

In the Gospel of Matthew the Beatitudes are where Jesus’ teachings begin, and the reason he starts with this list of all the people who will be blessed is because he wants people to know the difference that Jesus and his teachings are going make in people’s lives and in the life of the world.

Through him the poor will be given the Kingdom of Heaven. Through him those who mourn will be comforted. Through him those who desire righteous will be satisfied, the merciful shown mercy, the pure in heart will finally see God, and the peacemakers will be recognized as God’s children.

But of course, there is only one way to put any of these promises to the test, that is by coming to and learning from Jesus.

I hope you’re able to come to St. Paul’s this Sunday as we gather to learn from Jesus and to be blessed in his presence.
