March Payroll Guidelines
All monthly teacher and administrative payrolls normally paid on the 20th of each month will be paid on Thursday, March 10, because of spring break. For the business office to process payroll in time, the deadline is Tuesday March 1, for employees to submit any changes for payroll. This is a firm deadline. Unfortunately, they cannot accept any late submissions for payroll changes. Please contact payroll@ankenyschools.org with any questions.

Sub Secretary Infinite Campus Login
In order to maintain confidentiality of student information, a process that mirrors that of the substitute nurse Infinite Campus login is being created for substitute secretaries and will be implemented soon. A daily email will be sent from Infinite Campus to building-selected individuals with a unique password for the substitute secretary. That password will allow users to login to Infinite Campus and view site-specific information for that day only. Passwords expire daily at 4:00pm. The target date for implementation is Monday, February 21.

Learning Corner with Al Neppl, Director of Professional Learning and Leadership Development
If you have been subbing in our buildings and classrooms this year, it’s very likely that you might have encountered posters, signs, lesson plans, activities or assemblies related to the 7 Habits and Leader in Me.

What Are the 7 Habits? And What is Leader in Me?
Some of you might remember learning about the 7 Habits through previous work experiences or a book you read. In fact, the 7 Habits within our schools are derived from the original 7 Habits for Highly Effective People written by Dr. Stephen Covey in 1989.

The 7 Habits are:
  1. Be Proactive
  2. Begin With The End in Mind
  3. Put First Things First
  4. Think Win-Win
  5. Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
  6. Synergize
  7. Sharpen The Saw
They are timeless principles of effectiveness.

In 1999, Muriel Summers, Principal of A.B. Combs Elementary School in Raleigh, North Carolina went to a seminar on the 7 Habits by Dr. Stephen Covey. From this presentation, Muriel Summers began to wonder if the 7 Habits could be implemented within an elementary school. After much thought and collaboration, Muriel determined that the best path to improving her school was through empowering her students to see and believe in themselves as Leaders. Muriel and her staff set out to, “To Develop Leaders One Child at a Time” by implementing the 7 Habits. And from this, Leader in Me was developed in cooperation with Dr. Stephen Covey and FranklinCovey.

Dr. Amy Dittmar first brought Leader in Me and the 7 Habits to Ankeny Schools, while she was the principal at Westwood Elementary. As the word spread and excitement too, one by one and then several elementary schools at a time started to implement Leader in Me and the 7 Habits. We have now made a commitment to become a PK-12 Leader in Me school district. While subbing you should hopefully see kid friendly posters and language in our halls and classrooms depicting each of the 7 Habits. We strive to have all of our staff and students demonstrating and understanding how the 7 Habits can show up in our personal lives and at school.

As Dr. Stephen Covey has shared, “there is hope in all people”. We must believe that there is a leader in all of us. In our administrators, our teachers, our staff, in you, and especially in our students.

Thank you for supporting Ankeny Schools!

An Ankeny Graduate Is...
We are thrilled to be launching a process to re-imagine our graduate profile, a document that will work together with our new strategic plan and equity framework, to help us chart a path for the district's future. The graduate profile will serve as our district's North Star, outlining the competencies and characteristics we collectively believe all of our students should have by the time they graduate from our district. We need your help to develop this important guide for our work. All staff are encouraged to take a few minutes to share their ideas via this brief form. If you would like to join the task force that will meet every other week in March and April to finalize the graduate profile, please express your interest in the same form by February 23rd. Thank you for your contributions!

Strategic Plan Update
Since September, we've been seeking your input on the strategic plan for our district that our community is working to build together. We're excited to have reached the midpoint in that work. Over the next few weeks, our action teams will be working to establish concrete objectives that they believe will help our district achieve the vision outlined by the core team this fall. And, again, we need your input. At some point by February 23rd, we encourage you to take 5-10 minutes to let us know on this form what actions our district should prioritize to bring this vision to life.
Dates to Remember:
  • March 11 - No School
  • March 14-18 - Spring Break
  • April 15 - Teacher Work Day - No school for students
