GLL Sport Foundation - February 2017 Newsletter


2017 Applications

The GLL Sport Foundation applications for the 2017/18 award cycle closed on the 20th of February. We have had over 3000 applications from talented athletes all over the country - a record number!

Athletes will be informed if they are successful at the beginning of April with many local events taking place for athletes to receive their awards. GLL are now operating over 61 areas across the UK, increasing the amount of athletes they are able to support. We are looking forward to supporting our biggest cohort of athletes since the programme began back in 2008.

We have an exciting few months coming up - please keep a look out for our final number of supported athletes for the 2017/18 awards period and plenty of athlete stories.

London Lions - Free Tickets for Supported Athletes

Our supported athletes can now access tickets to watch the London Lions Basketball Club throughout the 2016/17 season at the Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. 

The basketball season started in October and continues through until April 2017. London Lions have had a fantastic start to the season and we hope this continues through to next year. Please see the home fixtures

Pentathlon GB sent out a strong squad to the Hungarian Indoor with fellow GB athlete Kerenza Bryson finished in 8th place, closely followed by GLL Sport Foundation supported athlete Charlotte Follett in 11th place. The competition was held over 2 days with many big names including 2016 Women’s World Champion Sarolta Kovacs competingRead more.

As if there aren’t enough reasons to apply into the GLL Sport Foundation for a training membership – another one has been added to the list! Kensington Leisure Centre played host to the England Rugby Squad, as they ramped up training in the run up to their match against Italy on Sunday 26 February 2017. Read more.

This month Emily returned to Brazil to play the Banana Bowl and the Grade A tournament in Porto Alegre. This year the Banana Bowl was a month earlier than last and was staged in Criciuma, a mid sized town two hours two south of Florianopolis. Conditions were intense – extreme temperatures and very high humidity – but Emily managed to handle these well and secured a place in the final. Read more.

The British Indoor Team Trials took place on the 11th of February as part of selection for the European Indoor Championships. Two supported athletes came away as champions; Dan Bramble (Long Jump) and Shelayna Oskan-Clarke (800m) who have been chosen as the February Athletes of the Month after their selection for the European Indoor Championships.
