Northern Turnpike Extension Options Proposed
Sumter County and the City of Wildwood submitted a joint letter in February to the Florida Turnpike Enterprise. The letter explained that both jurisdictions do not support the turnpike proceeding north of SR 44 while East of I-75, on the basis, that they want to reduce the adverse impact on the historic African-American Community of Royal. The pictures above are the alternative routes that Sumter County and the City of Wildwood are proposing. The Northern Turnpike Extension project is proposed to extend the Florida's Turnpike from the northern terminus in Wildwood to a logical and appropriate terminus further north, according to Florida Department of Transportation. The extension project's goal is to enhance regional connectivity, address regional congestion, accommodate increased travel demand, and improve hurricane evacuation.
