TMR Facility Progressing Through Construction Phases

The reclamation and manufacturing facility is currently in the vertical construction phase with metal uprights and beams visible from CR 470. The new business brings an estimated $78M of capital investment and new job opportunities for production workers, equipment operators, CDL drivers, and more. The facility will utilize the latest technology in the recycling industry to produce raw materials that will re-enter the global supply chain and contribute to environmental sustainability.

Some staffing changes are coming to Sumter County Economic Development. Frank Calascione joined SCED in 2017 and took over the director's role in 2018. Frank is leaving to take a position with neighboring Citrus County. Kristy Russell who had previously served as an Economic Development Specialist is back in that role on the SCED Team and along with County Administrator Bradley Arnold, will be available to assist SCED's businesses and partners.
Florida Trend Magazine's 2023 Outlook reported that in the last 3 years, population growth in Sumter County showed an increase of 13,379 people.

Latest Efforts to Reform H-2A Visa Program Fails in Congress
The Farm Workforce Modernization Act sought to modernize and expand the H-2A Program in an attempt to supply a more stable workforce for agricultural producers. The bill passed in the U.S. House of Representatives but did not pass in the U.S. Senate. Incoming leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives said the bill will not be taken up for a vote in the next session.

Workforce Housing Under Construction in the Coleman Area
Approximately 550 workforce homes are under construction in the Coleman Ridge Development just south of Coleman's City Hall. With the US Census Bureau reporting that over 21,000 workers commute into Sumter County each day to work, an emphasis on workforce housing has been a Sumter County priority since the completion of a housing study in 2018.

CareerSource Central Florida Apprenticeship Program
Apprenticeship is a proven method of training new workers. CSCFL will be hosting a workshop for employers and community partners on Wednesday, March 1^st from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Lake Sumter State College in Leesburg. The workshop will feature apprenticeship programs and employers, sharing insight on the value of starting and maintaining an apprenticeship.
