February 1st signals the beginning of Black History Month. Please take a moment to celebrate the achievements of African Americans and their central role in the history of the United States. Dorothy Height, Bessie Coleman, Gordon Parks, and Jane Bolin to name a few.
Apparently, Punxsuatawney Phil predicts 6 more weeks of winter ( there was never a doubt in my mind). I ask that all students dress warmly as we go outside if the temperature and windchill are above 10 degrees or even a slight drizzle. (Snow Pants, boots, coat, hat and mittens are essential, please let us know if you need help with acquiring any of these)
Feb.13th at 6:30 p.m. is the Super Bowl (for those of you who follow football).
February break is the 21st -25th.
We continue to follow the rules regarding masking in school and follow the COVID protocols. If you are not in pool testing, but would like to be, please reach out to Nurse Brittany.
We know that COVID has disrupted many families and should anyone need food (even for the weekend) or clothing for their children, please contact Carolyn Todd or Dencie McEnroe.
We are still in need of ed techs, substitute teachers and bus drivers. This is the time to get trained and apply if you have ever been tempted!!
My door is always open to parents, staff and students for whatever they may need. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Have a great week,
Early release day on Friday, February 18th
February vacation is February 21st through the 25th.
Middle schoolers! I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that Hermon Mountain will not have tubing available due to ongoing staffing issues. The good news, however, is that Ms. Amanda and I are utterly brilliant, and we made a backup plan.
Instead of tubing, we will be heading to Chris' Pond on Friday, February 18th, right after school. That day is a half-day, so we will gather on the basketball court at dismissal, and we will walk over to the pond to skate, have hot cocoa, and eat goodies (nut-free and gluten-free options will be available). We hope to have a few outdoor heaters to warm up beside as well, but come bundled up. Thick socks or two pairs of socks are a very good idea.
We will return to the school by 3pm for pickup.
Parents, if your child will need ice skates, please email Ms. Amanda or me to let us know who will need them and what size shoes they wear.
Ms. Amanda will send home permission slips with students next week. You will need to have these signed and returned before the day of the event. WARNING: We will not accept permission slips on the day of the event.
If you have any questions, just email Ms. Amanda or me. Cheers!
Mr. Newman and Ms. Amanda

In correlation with the other schools in the district and guidance from Mr. Z regarding weather and outside recess, if the weather is less than 10 degrees, with windchill, children will NOT be going outside for recess.
Children in grades K-3 must be appropriately dressed in order to go outside in cold weather. If the teacher decides a student is not, the student must stay inside. There will be an adult to supervise during this time. Grade 4-8 students will all be going outside regardless so they need to be prepared.
It would be very helpful if you sent an extra set of mittens and an extra hat for your child to store in your child’s locker just in case. Because of COVID, we do not have extra hats and mittens to give out to students this year.
Please remember to let the office know if your child(ren) will be absent, tardy or dismissed early. When calling the school, please call 207-244-5502. If you have a new telephone number, could you let us know so that we can update our files. Thank you!
Pool Testing happens on Mondays. If you have not done this already, let me know if you would like to have your child(ren) participate.
If your child has not had the required immunizations for public schools then they cannot return to school until a doctors note is provided to me with a plan in place to receive the necessary vaccine(s).
As always, keep your child home if they are experiencing cold symptoms and have them tested if appropriate. Anyone who is COVID positive the guidance has changed to a 5 day quarantine. Please let the school nurse know if someone has tested positive using a home test.
