Hello Pemetic Families,

It is hard to believe that I have been here for a full month. I am getting into a routine and continuing to learn who everyone is and how to find them. I have quickly learned that the Pemetic family is a strong one as everyone pitches in when needed! (covering classes, driving the bus and cleaning) I feel honored to be a part of it.

This is the last week of school before February break. (Feb. 21st-25th) Have a great time enjoying the great outdoors with your families and I hope everyone gets some much needed rest.

Valentine’s Day is on Monday. We ask that parents limit candy and instead send a healthy snack. If someone wants to send a homemade snack, please NO NUTS and send an ingredient list. We also ask that students bring home the candy that they receive, rather than eat it all at school.

Weather update: Dress for the weather! Many of the little kids are wet after recess, so an extra pair of dry gloves for a second recess would be great.

Feb.13th at 6:30 p.m. is the Super Bowl (The commercials are the best!).

We continue to follow the rules regarding masking in school and follow the COVID protocols.  If you are not in pool testing, but would like to be, please reach out to Nurse Brittany.

We know that COVID has disrupted many families and should anyone need food (even for the weekend) or clothing for their children, please contact Carolyn Todd or Dencie McEnroe.

We are still in need of ed techs, substitute teachers and bus drivers.  This is the time to get trained and apply if you have ever been tempted!!

My door is always open to parents, staff and students for whatever they may need. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Have a great week,

Michele Gurtler

Early release day on Friday, February 18th

at 12:30pm
February vacation is February 21st through the 25th.
Middle schoolers! I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that Hermon Mountain will not have tubing available due to ongoing staffing issues. The good news, however, is that Ms. Amanda and I are utterly brilliant, and we made a backup plan.

Instead of tubing, we will be heading to Chris' Pond on Friday, February 18th, right after school. That day is a half-day, so we will gather on the basketball court at dismissal, and we will walk over to the pond to skate, have hot cocoa, and eat goodies (nut-free and gluten-free options will be available). We hope to have a few outdoor heaters to warm up beside as well, but come bundled up. Thick socks or two pairs of socks are a very good idea.

We will return to the school by 3pm for pickup.

Parents, if your child will need ice skates, please email Ms. Amanda or me to let us know who will need them and what size shoes they wear.

Ms. Amanda will send home permission slips with students next week. You will need to have these signed and returned before the day of the event. WARNING: We will not accept permission slips on the day of the event.

If you have any questions, just email Ms. Amanda or me. Cheers!

Please Attend the Southwest Harbor Selectboard Meeting on Tuesday March 8th, 6pm at SWH Fire Station about the Future of the Pond!
On Tuesday, March 8th, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. the Southwest Harbor Conservation Commission will be giving a presentation to the Board of Selectmen to obtain their approval to move forward with the Chris's Pond project.
The Chris’s Pond project is an incredible opportunity to preserve and enhance public access to the Pond for generations to come at almost no cost to the Town, provide a permanent natural buffer around the pond protecting it from negative impacts associated with possible future development and make much-needed improvements. Full details of the project's scope are available on the SWH Town website
All island wide friends of Chris’s Pond are encouraged to attend in person at the SWH Fire Station
Or join via Zoom, a link will be provided on the SWH Town website:
Please spread the word and ask your friends and family to attend this upcoming meeting on: Tuesday, March 8th, 2022, at 6:00 p.m.
Thanks for your support and attendance!

In correlation with the other schools in the district and guidance from Mr. Z regarding weather and outside recess, if the weather is less than 10 degrees, with windchill, children will NOT be going outside for recess.

Children in grades K-3 must be appropriately dressed in order to go outside in cold weather.  If the teacher decides a student is not, the student must stay inside. There will be an adult to supervise during this time. Grade 4-8 students will all be going outside regardless so they need to be prepared.

It would be very helpful if you sent an extra set of mittens and an extra hat for your child to store in your child’s locker just in case.  Because of COVID, we do not have extra hats and mittens to give out to students this year.

Please remember to let the office know if your child(ren) will be absent, tardy or dismissed early. When calling the school, please call 207-244-5502.  If you have a new telephone number, could you let us know so that we can update our files. Thank you!

Hi Families,

Thank you all for the awesome communication these past few weeks.  It truly helps being updated with any health changes and is much appreciated. Anyone who is COVID positive is required to quarantine for a full 5 days.  The superintendent has made it a requirement for all AOS 91 schools that a negative test administered by the school nurse is required in order to return to school.  This test will be given on day 6.  If the student is negative, then he/she can return to school.  If the student is still positive, then the full 10 day quarantine is required without the option of testing out of quarantine.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding during all these changes.
