Roland GahlerOur Patron's Vision

One of the most rewarding experiences for a child is to discover the wonder of growing plants: gently planting a seed, eagerly waiting for it to sprout, and then excitedly seeing the seedling burst up through the dirt.

It's mesmerizing. All their senses are captivated. It stirs within them a sense of pride, accomplishment and a feeling of importance. It's a priceless moment that can anchor and inspire them for a lifetime. Sadly, too few children get to live such moments.

And that is what I am so passionate about—creating opportunities for children to be inspired by the breathtaking wonders of the natural world around them! Plant a Seed & See What Grows Foundation has been a dream of mine for over 20 years. Now, through the Foundation we are creating moments of inspiration that can last a lifetime—in classrooms, in school gardens, and by farm visits.

I invite you to join me in opening up a world of possibilities for our children. A world where their ideas, dreams and hopes turn into reality; where their receptive young minds can grow and thrive, and they can become confident and caring young adults who are committed stewards of planet earth.

So, please read on and discover how Plant a Seed & See What Grows Foundation is spreading seeds of learning, literacy and inspiration. Check out the Plant a Seed—Read! article to learn about our new literacy project for youngsters.

Get involved in our Educate. Inspire. Thrive! activities that use the Foundation's classroom resources and hands-in-the-dirt planting kits. These and many other projects are all possible because of your donations of Treasures, Time and Talent. For that we THANK YOU.

With you in creating a better world for children everywhere,

Roland Gahler
Founding Patron & Board Chairman

Plant a Seed Read!
educational storytelling program

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our new educational storytelling program for toddlers, preschoolers and youngsters: Plant a Seed—Read!

Featuring two inspirational storybooks authored by Roland Gahler, Plant a Seed—Read! supports children's literacy across Canada. Through the generosity of Roland, our Foundation is able to donate to Canadian public libraries his two books: Plant a Seed & See What Grows and What to Do with What You Grew. These bright, colourful and fun storybooks are available in English and French. They are all about encouraging children to see what their future can be like, to inspire them to realize their dreams, and to become good stewards of the earth as they learn about seeds and plants and experience how they grow. Plant a Seed & See What Grows storybook Several libraries already have accepted the storybooks into their collections for children.

Plant a Seed—Read! program also includes a storytime package of colouring books and pencils that are inspired by the Plant a Seed & See What Grows storybook. Libraries can also request the Foundation's planting kits for preschoolers and youngsters to enjoy as part of the storytime activities. The Foundation is pleased to provide these at no-charge to public libraries.

Storytime in Action!

In July, 2016 the Coquitlam Public
Library hosted two Plant a Seed—Read!
storytimes led by Rachel Burton, chair of the
Foundation's Education Advisory Committee,
an elementary school teacher. Over 60 kids
enjoyed the storytime and a great interactive
planting session.

Foundation's educational projectsIt's been a busy spring and summer and, now, a fruitful fall as a number of the Foundation's educational projects are underway.

Our Plant a Seed Classroom Education Kits, inspired by the colourful children's books—Plant a Seed & See What Grows and What to Do with What You Grew, are rolling out to schools. Almost 600 young students in two BC schools (in Vancouver and Burnaby) and another 50 students in New Brunswick have already used the kits. The Classroom kits are compliant with most provincial curriculum for primary grades and are available in English or French. They include a copy of each storybook, a set of colourful grade-appropriate workbooks, mini-planting kits and seeds! Contact us at to learn more, or to order the Classroom kits.

school garden frontIt's also been busy on the school garden front! The Foundation is helping to improve the outdoor learning experience at Victoria's West-Mont Montessori School. We've given $2,500 towards the building of a garden shelter in their school's organic garden. Construction is underway and we look forward to reporting on the completed project soon. In the Ottawa area, the Foundation is partnering with Growing Up Organic to help create two new school gardens and support 10 to 15 school garden workshops during this school year. And the sowing & harvesting continues at North Vancouver's Sutherland Secondary Schoolyard Market Garden—the first school garden project we helped support in collaboration with Edible Garden Project.
