Adding Videos to Your Website

Video content can add extra personality and dimension to your page. Read more about how!

You may have seen or heard about the new responsive template that we recently launched on the top level sections of Oxy.edu. And if you haven't seen the new design yet, visit any of the main pages featured in our site nav (like Life at Oxy or Academics) to check them out!

One of the features people have been most excited to see is that we can now feature videos along with images in the main slideshow at the top of each page. And although this new design won't be available on academic or administrative department pages until later in the year, you might not know that you CAN feature video content on our page even in the existing design template!

For detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to add videos to your webpage, please visit our video tutorial on the Web Help site. A streamlined tutorial is below for quick and easy reference.

Step 1: Upload your video to YouTube or Vimeo

The first step to adding video to your site is to upload it to a video hosting service like Vimeo or Youtube (other video hosting sites work as well, as long as they will generate an embed code for your video). Once you have uploaded your video, or if the video you want to embed already exists online, proceed to the next step!

Step 2: Embed the video on your webpage

First, you will need to copy the embed code from your video on YouTube or Vimeo. Both YouTube and Vimeo have "share" buttons you can click, and you will then need to select "embed" from the various share options. See the screenshots below for how to select the embed option from both sites.

YouTube
Click the "share" button below your video and then embed. For optimal display on department pages, change the width of your video to 688 and the height to 387.

Vimeo
Click the paper airplane icon at the top right of the video to open the share options, then click on "Show options" next to the embed field. For optimal display on department pages, change the width of your video to 688 and the height to 387.
Once you have copied the embed code from the video hosting site, log in to your Oxy web editor account (visit oxy.edu/web-help to log in), navigate to the page where you want to embed for video, and click edit (remember that you might need to refresh the page once or twice to see your edit options!). Click within the text editor so that your cursor is placed in the spot where you want to embed your video. Click the "embed media" icon in the text editor, which is the furthest icon on the right, then paste your embed code and click "OK."
Once you save your changes, your video will display wherever you placed it within your content! You can embed videos anywhere within the body of your page, and original video content can be a great way to show the personality of your administrative or academic department.

Reminder: Caption your videos!

Remember to caption all videos before posting them to our site as part of our effort to improve accessibility on oxy.edu. Our Disability Services team works with an outside vendor to caption any and all video content; the captioning work usually takes about 7 days. Before posting any video content to your website simply email Luci Masredjian, Oxy's Disability Services Coordinator, to initiate a captioning request.
