Homecare Medical is delighted to have been a service provider to you and your patients this year. 

We’ve supported practices through power outages and specific health events (like the campylobacter outbreak), and by successfully adapting to and accommodating the changing needs of PHOs.

Uppermost in our minds right now are the recent earthquakes, and we’re proud to have provided 24/7 cover during these and other natural disasters, like flooding. In addition to helping you directly, Homecare Medical took a lead role in promoting the Earthquake Support Line to the public.

We continue to provide after-hours services to the majority of New Zealand and have welcomed a number of new practices to our services while working with others to find new, innovative ways of delivering services.

With Christmas fast approaching, you will already have received this form and returned it to Homecare Medical indicating what level of service you require over the holiday season. To help you and your patients get the most out of our service, here are our top tips on preparing patients who require repeat prescriptions or warfarin monitoring and making sure everyone is informed of your opening hours.

Free earthquake support line for all Kiwis

In response to the recent earthquakes and aftershocks, the Ministry of Health expanded the reach of the 24/7 Earthquake Support Line 0800 777 846 run by Homecare Medical as part of the National Telehealth Service.

The support line, which offers social and psychological support, is open to anyone in New Zealand anxious or concerned about how the situation is affecting them or their whānau. They can call for emotional support, advice or just for someone to talk to.

There is also a special webpage with information and resources to help people get through.

The support line is staffed with qualified mental health experts who have direct access to Healthline nurses and other 24/7 national telehealth staff. Psychiatrist Dr David Codyre is the Clinical Lead for Mental Health and Addiction Services at Homecare Medical.

Anniversary time: National Telehealth Service

Minister of Health Jonathan Coleman visited the Homecare Medical Auckland contact centre on 1 November to mark the first year of the National Telehealth Service.

Most importantly, Dr Coleman met up with frontline teams to ask questions and talk about the work we do – thanks, in particular, to Renu (pictured left with Service Delivery Manager for Healthline and After-Hours Nicola Russell and Dr Coleman) for being such a passionate champion.

In the first year of the National Telehealth Service there have been more than 550,000 contacts to our services. That’s more than one contact every minute, with 81% of calls answered within 20 seconds!

Homecare Medical is the provider of the first integrated National Telehealth Service for New Zealand.

The service has registered nurses and mental health and addictions specialists providing phone and online advice, support, assessment of symptoms, triage, treatment advice, and preventive and educational aspects for a range of health, wellbeing and counselling services.
