A few weeks ago, during a mid-week Bible study, I referred to an old song we use to sing when I was a teenager.  Part of the lyrics said, “it’s a battlefield, brother, not a recreation room. It’s a fight and not a game. Run if you want to, run if you will, but I came here to stay.” That old song made me go and re-study what Paul wrote to the Ephesians concerning spiritual warfare. When a soldier goes to boot camp, they are taught everything they need to know about the weapons that they will be using in combat. They learn to assemble and disassemble their rifle and their pistol. They do it repeatedly until it becomes second nature to them.

The book of Ephesians lists six pieces of equipment that are absolutely essential for us to win the spiritual battle of life. Keep in mind that as Paul is writing the letter to the Ephesians that he is in prison.  There were Roman soldiers all around him. As he looked at their uniform and their weapons, he made some incredible spiritual application for us.  For the next few days, let’s consider what Paul wrote.  My prayer is that we would become more familiar with our spiritual armor because we are engaged in a spiritual battle.

He began with “truth like a belt around your waist.” Every Roman soldier wore a thick belt.  Think of something like you would see a weightlifter wear, or someone that is picking up heavy loads all day. It provides support for them as they work under the strain, but it also provides protection for them. It would protect their stomach area. Another vital function of the belt was to hold the sword. The belt was the last piece of equipment the soldier would put on, and he would take all of the loose-fitting clothing and tuck it into the belt. That is where the King James phrase, “gird up your loins,” originated.

Our spiritual belt of truth keeps us from error.  Jesus said, “you will know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32) What does the belt of truth do for us? It protects us from error. Where do we find truth? In the Word of God. “Your Word is truth!” (John 17:17)

Our spiritual belt of truth holds everything together.  It is by being in God’s Word (truth) that everything comes together and is held together. “He is before all things, and by Him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17)

Here is a word from the Word:

Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and His vast strength. Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the tactics of the Devil. For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness, against spiritual forces of evil in the heavens. This is why you must take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day and having prepared everything to take your stand. Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. In every situation, take the shield of faith, and with it you will be able to extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s Word.” (Ephesians 6:10-17)

Have a great Tuesday!
