Johnston is collecting box tops which earn money for their school!    Many products you buy have them.  Click here to see a list.  There will be a jar at the check in table.  Bring any box tops you've collected during the week, and we will deliver them to  Johnston when school starts back in the fall.
There was a nice article in the Mountain Express about the formation of our club 100 years ago.  The writer didn't get the date of our charter correct, but he did reference many things that were published in the Asheville Citizen 100 years ago about the Kiwanis Club. Read the article here
Our 100 year gala will be September 21 at Lutheridge.  We are in the process of getting some sponsors.  We are trying to reach out to organizations that Kiwanis has helped in the past as well as other businesses that want to support our mission.  If you have any ideas, or know of any former Kiwanians with a business that might like to be a sponsor, please let us know or take sponsorship information to them.

Print a copy of the sponsorship information here.

We will also be having a silent auction that night to raise money for our division playground at Eliada Home.  Please help us gather items such as tickets, gift certificates, art work, or anything that might bring in some money at the auction.  Ask for a gift card donation at your favorite restaurant, or ask a business you frequent to donate something.

Print a copy of the invitation/flyer to take to businesses to ask for donations for our silent auction or give to someone you want to invite to the gala.

The deadline for the sponsors, auction and RSVP will be August 10th!  Buy your ticket here
Fred Thompson spoke to us about the history of silent films in Western North Carolina. There were 54 silent films made in Asheville between 1900 and 1929.  Only two of those survive;  Thunder - Bolts of Fate, made in 1918 and Conquest of Canaan in 1921. After much research, he found Thunder - Bolts in Russia.  We were shown some clips from these films during his talk.  Fred has catalogued over 400 silent film titles and 14 of those still exist.  If you're interested in seeing them, they are sometimes shown at Grail Moviehouse. They will probably show the Asheville films there in February.  Fred's research of film history has resulted in a book, Asheville Movies, Volume 1 : The Silent Era   His next book with be about the production of "Thunder Road" in Asheville in 1957.
