Ms. Meredith Switzer, Executive Director of Homeward Bound WNC, was our speaker.  Homeward Bound began in 1988 as Hospitality House,  serving the growing homeless population through long-term emergency shelter. In 2006, Hospitality House became Homeward Bound of WNC, and shifted its focus from managing homelessness with shelter to ending homelessness with permanent housing.  Their mission is preventing and ending homelessness in our community through permanent housing and support.  Since they began using the Housing First model in 2006, more than 2,200 people have been housed with an 89% retention rate.
Currently, Homeward Bound has a contract to buy the Days Inn on Tunnel Road for a permanent supportive housing project.  Eighty-Five rooms will be turned into small efficiency apartments.  There will be built in resources such as clinics and counseling.  So far, seven million dollars have been raised, and they plan to close on the property in July 2021.  There will be a capital campaign to raise seven million more for renovations.  Their hope is to have the first clients move in at the end of 2022.
