Welcome back families, students, and educators,
This new year 2023 the East San Gabriel Valley Special Education Local Plan Area Community Advisory Committee (ESGV SELPA CAC) welcomes the new year with much optimism as we continue to collaborate with others locally and statewide.
ESGV SELPA CAC Updates:
ESGV SELPA CAC Parent Training:
We are pleased to announce our last Parent Training of the school year is in person at the ESGV SELPA office on Thursday, February 23rd, 2023, in Conference Room #1. The topic is Functional Communication. Please see the flyer for the link below. Families and professionals will register using Eventbrite.
West Covina Unified School District Love and Logic Series:
We are also collaborating with the West Covina Unified School District in the Love and Logic Series, which provides six sessions to Parents and Caregivers. This series will help to address relationships, behaviors, empathy, and much more. This series is virtual. Materials will be provided at no cost. This workshop is open to all ESGV SELPA families.
3rd Annual Making A Difference Award Nominations:
The ESGV SELPA CAC is currently accepting nominations for our 3rd Annual Making a Difference Award Ceremony. Do you know someone that is making a difference throughout your district or charter school? This is the time to nominate them for the Making A Difference Award. CAC Meetings:
The CAC continues to offer a hybrid model for Business Meetings. At our December meeting, Mr. Rene Valdes from Covina Valley Unified School District and Ms. Gretchen Carrera from Bassett Unified School District provided updates on the activities within their districts.
Edith Aburto, from the San Gabriel Pomona Regional Center (SGPRC), shared information about SGPRC Self Determination meetings, Vendor meetings, and Community meetings that are held on Zoom. Click here and here to learn more.
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Trainings for Families and Professionals (Parents' Place):
The San Gabriel Pomona Parents' Place Family Resource and Empowerment Center are working in collaboration to provide trainings for families on ADR. The next training will address, "Overcoming Misinterpretations In Cross-Cultural Communication During the IEP meeting." This training will be provided in person at the East San Gabriel Valley SELPA on Thursday, February 16, 2023. The funding is provided in part by the California Department of Education, the East San Gabriel Valley SELPA, the West San Gabriel Valley SELPA, and the Pomona USD SELPA.
Superintendents Council Meeting Update:
The Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Historian of the East San Gabriel Valley SELPA CAC provided their annual updates to the Superintendents’ Council. The CAC Officers presented on their recent events, including numerous parent trainings, the 8th Annual CAC Arts Festival, legislative advocacy, and progress on the CAC’s strategic plan. Our CAC has over 30 active members, appointed by the governing boards of the 15 local educational agencies in the SELPA, and plays a critical advisory role in all aspects of supporting students with disabilities and their families.
