Kick Start your Board Development in 2016

Board development is crucial to the success of any organization and particularly for smaller or all-volunteer nonprofits where the board by necessity is a “working board”.  Building the board up to its full capacity is not always easy.  It takes time but you reap the benefits many times over.

Over the past couple of month we’ve been approached many times by smaller organizations asking one simple question: how do we get started?  Emerging Executive is excited to offer a new Board Development half day session to help you advance and engage your board.  Starting with a brief and confidential survey to board members designed to understand the key issues and challenges facing your nonprofit organization, we then tailor a 3 hour workshop designed to suit your needs. Cost for the basic package is $675. To learn more about all our board development services contact us at nadia@emergingexecutive.com.

Build the Foundation for Successful Fundraising in 2016

Over 80% of charitable dollars given each year come from individual donations. You can reach donors in many different way: events, friendraisers, an annual appeal and online fundraising platforms to name just a few activities.  Yet you won’t be successful unless you have people to ask to attend or invest in your organization!

The foundation for successful fundraising starts with the database. Salesforce.com, Bloomerang.com, Little Greenlight and DonorSnap are just some of the cloud based fundraising databases you could consider. However if you are short of time and budget, that’s no excuse. You can get an email fundraising database started quickly and easily thanks to tools like MailChimp (www.mailchimp.com) or Constant Contact (www.constantcontact.com).

So I ran an experiment this week. I signed up for a MailChimp free account. Then I exported contact names from Outlook into a CSV file which I compared with the large pile of business cards collected in the past few months, and added another 30 names.  Within 2 hours, I had an email database with 150 names ready to go.  It really is that easy!  Not a bad use of two hours of time - especially if your nonprofit needs money, and unrestricted funds, in a hurry!

What else could you do to add to your nonprofit organization's email database?
  • Ask your board members to provide 10 names and email addresses to you each month.  If you have an online database, they can even add this information themselves!
  • Have everyone pull up their Linked In accounts at your next board meeting. What connections do you have, that we should have?
  • Make a commitment to set up your database and add names to it every month.  A database is never static!
When you are ready to invest in your online fundraising platform,  Contact us for a copy of the Consumer’s Guide to Donor Management System for a summary of 29 online databases:
