It’s Not Just About the Money!

Imagine you are the lucky recipient of a Cummings $100,000 grant or a large federal grant.  You are happy to have secured the funding!  But you might not be able to use these funds to meet all of your needs since usually, these monies are earmarked for program use only.  Yet your sustainability depends on your ability to achieve balance between programs, management, governance and finance.  It's hard to plan a successful future if your funding restricts you to program planning only. You might be thinking that you could really use some help to figure all of this out.  And that’s where we come in! Whether you are a small start-up or a mature organization, Emerging Executive will work with you to develop a realistic growth plan that takes into account where you are in the organization lifecycle, and what your vision is for the future. Crowd Funding is here to stay! Give your fundraising a leg up!


In our inaugural newsletter, we discussed the importance of creating your own fundraising database.  Without a well-developed donor database, raising money will be a challenge.  And there’s another very good reason to start that database.  You will need one to participate in GlobalGiving (www.globalgiving.org), an online crowdfunding platform.  

GlobalGiving can be a powerful tool in your fundraising arsenal. For example, one of the organizations I support, Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue, is an all-volunteer nonprofit (www.mickaboo.org) with an annual budget of $295,000.  In four years, they have raised over $105,000 through GlobalGiving, including $17,000 in “free money” that came from the many matching fund opportunities offered through the site.  These funds have enabled Mickaboo to add over 1000 new supporters outside of their catchment area, including 17 regular monthly donors.  Even better – they got some great exposure from Oprah!  To qualify for GlobalGiving, you have to participate in an “open challenge” where you are going to have to rely on your donor database – with email addresses -  to raise $5000 from a minimum of 40 donors over two years. New Open Door Grants at The Boston Foundation      

First deadline:  May 27, 2016

Last week I attended an information session at The Boston Foundation (TBF) to learn about their new Open Door Grant Making Initiative. TBF will allocate a portion of its grant-making dollars to this initiative. Grants will be made quarterly with the first application due in May.  And, grants will be accepted from 68 cities outside of Greater Boston including Gloucester and Salem on the North Shore and Quincy and Weymouth on the South Shore.  You can find a full list of cities and towns  and the dates of further information sessions including Lynn on May 2nd on the TBF website. Open Door Grants will be made to nonprofits that may not be directly aligned with the strategies, goals and approaches pursued in the five impact areas the Foundation has focused on since 2009 and will continue to focus on until at least 2020.  New and existing nonprofit organizations in Greater Boston are encouraged to look to Open Door Grants to support their efforts to meet existing needs as well as test new ideas and innovations that address the most critical challenges facing our community. You will also learn how to help your board and volunteers become savvy advocates for your organization and the basic tools essential to organize all your fundraising activities.  This is most suitable for grassroots organization looking to start or accelerate their fundraising.

Book Recommendation
The Pollyanna Principle by Hildy Gottlieb about catalytic thinking and powerful questions.  My takeaway so far: Martin Luther King said "I have a dream", not "I have a problem".  

Asking the right questions, rooted in abundance, will help you reinvent yourself and your nonprofit organization.
