At our campaign meeting on Thursday 14th April we all agreed that it is important to keep up the pressure following our occupation and demonstration of 2,000 people. The council continues to mislead and to dig itself deeper into its entrenched and destructive position. The archives in Minet library have been closed; the stock support service and home visit service have been locked out of Carnegie library. Waterloo library is due to close in May/June Upper Norwood Library will cease to have any library staff at the end of this month (April).
Everyone welcomed Rachel Heywood’s break from the labour group, her speech at the rally, her open letter and her tweet wearing one of our Don’t Steal Our libraries T-shirt to Jeremy Corbyn. Helen Hayes’ most recent letter however is very disappointing. The Judicial review work continues. The DCMS has announced it will be writing to Lambeth. There was a strong determination to push for the staff/community mutual and to argue that the council should reopen the closed libraries.

Campaigning events:

  • People’s Assembly demonstration – Saturday 16th April meet 11.00- 11.30 am Windrush square to join the march together
  • Streatham Society monthly meeting: My work as the council leader with Lib Peck – Monday 18th April 8pm – Woodlawns, 16 Leigham Court Road SW16
  • World Book Night –Saturday 23rd April – at libraries across the borough. Look out for details
  • Cajun and Country Saturday Night Knees-Up – Saturday 23rd April 8pm – the Joiners Arms, 35 Denmark Hill SE5 – all donations to Save Lambeth Libraries
  • Junior doctors & Teachers demonstration – Tuesday 26th April assemble: 5pm St Thomas Hospital
  • UNJL demonstration – date to be announced
  • Full Possession Order Court case 4th May – campaign statement to be publicised

 

It was agreed:

  • To continue to focus on GLL
  • To organise Lambeth College students
  • Friends and campaigners will continue to organise events outside the closed libraries: Minet and Carnegie
  • To consider organising road blocks to stop books being removed if/when this happens
  • Labour party members to continue to work in their wards
  • To continue with letters/emails to councillors and MPs
  • To continue to make demands on Sadiq Khan – where do you stand?
  • To consider a public debate – to be discussed at future meeting
  • To consider a photo exhibition of occupation
