At our campaign meeting on Thursday 14th April we all agreed that it is important to keep up the pressure following our occupation and demonstration of 2,000 people. The council continues to mislead and to dig itself deeper into its entrenched and destructive position. The archives in Minet library have been closed; the stock support service and home visit service have been locked out of Carnegie library. Waterloo library is due to close in May/June Upper Norwood Library will cease to have any library staff at the end of this month (April).
Everyone welcomed Rachel Heywood’s break from the labour group, her speech at the rally, her open letter and her tweet wearing one of our Don’t Steal Our libraries T-shirt to Jeremy Corbyn. Helen Hayes’ most recent letter however is very disappointing. The Judicial review work continues. The DCMS has announced it will be writing to Lambeth. There was a strong determination to push for the staff/community mutual and to argue that the council should reopen the closed libraries.
