Room in the Wood : Planning Permission

We’re very pleased to report that the Highland Council, on 14 April 2016, approved our plans for the Room in the Wood and the dining room extension to Mossfield House.

Building on both projects is expected to start in July 2016 and is scheduled to be completed in September 2016.

The booking arrangements for the Room in the Wood for 2017 will be provided via our website www.roominthewood.scot later in 2016. The exact date for the launch of the 2017 booking calendar will be promoted in a subsequent newsletter.

Settling In

We’ve spent April settling in to Mossfield House, Camustianavaig, including :-
  • getting a  landline and hopefully a broadband service by the end of April 2016
  • meeting the neighbours (including crofters, as our house is located in a long established  crofting area),
  • enrolling for Introduction to Gaelic classes (starting 28 April 2016) at the West Highland College/University of the Highlands and Islands outpost at Portree,
  • linking to a local history project based on The Braes
  • contributing to a John Muir Trust footpath maintenance working group on Bla Bheinn (Ron)
  • contributing to a Braes community tidy-up of some local beaches (from sea-borne material)
Ben Tianavaig

We walked up the local Ben Tianavaig from the gate in our garden on our third day of residence here as a welcome change from emptying packing cases and taking advantage of some fine weather.  The Ben is an excellent summit of modest height at 413m with distant views to The Minch, the Isle of Harris, mainland peaks of the N.W. Highlands, Skye’s Black and Red Cuillins, the nearby Isles of Raasay and Rona, and a fine overview of the town of Portree and its impressive bay.

Did you know?

There is a 75 mile walking route through Skye from Armadale (the ferry port in S.W. Skye) to Duntulm in N.Skye. The time assumed for the walk is eight days and Day 5 includes Camustianavaig en route.

If you are interested in this walk, if only from your armchair, there is a very well-presented book with inspiring photography by David Paterson.
Website Developments

We’ve added some pictures to our gallery section that we’ve taken in the last month or so whilst wandering around Skye and Raasay.

If you’ve missed a previous newsletter, there is now an archive section on the website to catch up on our news.

Many thanks to our website designers at Skye Websites for their excellent work.
