National Police Week

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.  Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supports of law enforcement.  Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our nation's capital each year.

Members of the Loveland Police Department play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Loveland.  It is important that all citizens know and understand the problems, duties, and responsibilities of their police department and that members of our police department recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them against violence or disorder, by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression, and by community outreach and education.

The Loveland Police Department, along with surrounding communities, will host a Junior Police Academy in June.  This program provides an unique experience for law enforcement professionals to come together with young people and share basic law enforcement knowledge, techniques, and experiences.  The cadets will learn about teamwork, respect, positive behavior, pride in one's work, and resistance to drugs and alcohol abuse.  The program runs from June 5-9. For more information contact Officer Barnes at 513-583-3000.

In addition, the Loveland Police Department partners with Miami Township and the City of Milford to host a 10 week Citizens Police Academy.  The class meets on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 pm. and runs from September through November.  Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and pass a criminal background check.  For more information contact Officer Chad Caudell at 513-583-3000.
