Boy Scouts Learn About Local Government

The boys representing the Arrow of Light Den 10 from Cub Scout Pack 888 wanted to learn more about local government so they contacted City of Loveland Vice Mayor Angie Settell.  The boys met Mrs. Settell at City Hall on February 16 and for a fun, educational evening.  They learned facts about the City and the activities that make Loveland a unique and vibrant community.  Many of them had used the bike trail, the river, attended parades and events such as the Fourth of July and Christmas in Loveland.

The boys sat at the City Council table and practiced making motions and running a meeting.  They discussed Robert's Rules of Order and the importance of being orderly so everyone has an opportunity to talk and express an opinion.  Each of the boys made motions and then discussed why the motion should be passed.

The 12 points of the Scout Law were talked about and Mrs. Settell said she could relate to many of them.  In her role as an elected official she must be trustworthy, helpful, courteous, and thrifty.  The last point was particularly important as it related to ensuring that taxes paid by residents were responsibly spent on services that protect, maintain, and make our community safe.  She asked the boys who received an allowance how they decided what to spend it on. They had various answers, but all agreed you can't spend more than you have.

Mrs. Settell gave a quiz and prizes were awarded.  "Both the boys and their parents showed a lot of interest with questions, comments, and suggestions.  I thoroughly enjoyed our time together." stated the Vice Mayor Settell.

If your cub scouts or other groups would like to meet with Vice Mayor Settell, tour City Hall, or learn more about the City of Loveland and local government, please contact Misty Cheshire at mcheshire@lovelandoh.gov or call 707-1437 to arrange an appointment.
