Issue #9 - Living Legends is Delivered to You Each Wednesday
This Week We Take A Look at:
Baker Beam
The tie to the old guard and new guard at Jim Beam
Living Legends
by Colonel Steve Akley
With our Living Legends Series, we take a look at the true players in the world of bourbon and how they have impacted the industry. It's going to be a fun journey, I hope you will join me each Wednesday as we explore the Living Legends of Bourbon.
PS - Why is a Cadillac the logo for the Living Legends series? Well, that's not any Cadillac, it's the tail fin of a 1959 Caddy, which I think is the greatest automobile ever built. That's just a personal choice, though. I also like the fact the name of the car, "Cadillac" can be synonymous with the "greatest version of something." If you say, "That's the Cadillac" of golf clubs," you are saying, "it's the best." Since we are celebrating the "biggest contributors to bourbon" it just feels right.
Baker Beam

Baker Beam
Legendary Distiller / Namesake of Baker's Bourbon, Jim Beam Distillery

The Baker Beam File
  • Distiller at Jim Beam during the Booker Noe era
  • Had a brand named after him by Booker Noe (Baker's Bourbon)
  • Serves as the official "unofficial Jim Beam historian"
There are very few people in the bourbon industry that can hush a crowd when they enter a room. In fact, besides Jimmy Russell, may be the only one other than today's featured individual. Baker Beam has that sort of aura.

I know, I've seen this firsthand.

A few years back, I got to go to the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame induction. All past inductees are invited to these ceremonies so it is like a "who's who" of bourbon. Despite all of these big name guests being in attendance, I can tell you that when Baker Beam walked into the room, all eyes went to him. He literally just has that sort of presence.

He should, though. He is a literal throwback to the best times in bourbon. We're talking production levels we are only finally starting to approach after this bourbon boom we've seen the last several years.

What makes Baker so mysterious is the fact that he literally was a rock star distiller before they were rock stars (he was the cool guy on the motorcycle), but he retired long before the return in interest we've seen over the last decade. So today, that leave him like a throwback to Booker Noe, Parker Beam and Elmer T. Lee. He's from a different era in the bourbon industry, but still around today to tell the tales from year's gone by.

He's such a great resource. He literally is a historian, a keeper of Beam family history. I just heard a story that made me smile about Baker. He has this amazing collection of Beam documents and artifacts. It's not in a museum, it's in his house, so there isn't an app you download to tell you about what you are looking at, Baker does that himself. Of course, there's so much that you probably can't get to all of it during one visit. No problem. He's got an order that he shares this stuff, he just puts a placeholder with your name on it where you got to in his collection. That way the next time you go, you pick up where you left off in your personalized tour.

That's a legendary guy, doing legendary things. Baker Beam, a true living legend!

PS - If anyone reading this can get me on one of those Baker Beam tours, I'm there! : )
