Issue #5 - Living Legends is Delivered to You Each Wednesday
This Week We Take A Look at:
Trey Zoeller
Incredibly Underrated but a True Living Legend
Living Legends
by Colonel Steve Akley
With our Living Legends Series, we take a look at the true players in the world of bourbon and how they have impacted the industry. It's going to be a fun journey, I hope you will join me each Wednesday as we explore the Living Legends of Bourbon.
PS - Why is a Cadillac the logo for the Living Legends series? Well, that's not any Cadillac, it's the tail fin of a 1959 Caddy, which I think is the greatest automobile ever built. That's just a personal choice, though. I also like the fact the name of the car, "Cadillac" can be synonymous with the "greatest version of something." If you say, "That's the Cadillac" of golf clubs," you are saying, "it's the best." Since we are celebrating the "biggest contributors to bourbon" it just feels right.

Trey Zoeller
Master Blender for Jefferson's Bourbon

The Trey Zoeller File
  • Co-Founder of the Jefferson's Bourbon Brand
  • Currently serves the Jefferson's Brand as the face of the organization as well as the Master Blender.
When we talk about the greats from bourbon, Trey Zoeller usually isn't in the conversation, but he should be. Trey has contributed a lot to bourbon without getting very much credit.

The knock on Trey, for those that don't want to acknowledge him as a living legend, would be the fact he owned a brand, but he wasn't a distiller, he was simply sourcing whiskey. When the company grew, he sold out and wasn't even an owner anymore.

Those are true statements, but, that doesn't mean Trey hasn't changed bourbon and led the industry because he has. Yes, he sources whiskey (it should be noted for the last 4 or 5 years, Jefferson's is laying down there own whiskey at Kentucky Artisan, but they are still primarily sourcing their product), but from the start, Trey realized he couldn't "out Jim Beam, Jim Beam" so he always did something to the whiskey. He had it aging in a sweat box (metal cargo shipping container), he finished it in a different barrel, he blended it with other types of whiskey... he put in on a boat. Trey Zoeller is a trendsetter in this stuff because as I list just a few things that he's done, your probably laughing but think about how many other brands have started doing these sort of things to their own whiskey because Jefferson's was doing it so successfully.

It's also true that the company Trey and his father started was sold out with Chet getting out of the business and Trey staying on to guide the brand. Though he's on his second ownership group, I believe both companies that have owned Jefferson's have largely allowed Trey to do his own thing so he's been allowed to run the brand as his own, without the headaches of ownership.

When I look at all that Trey has done... launching a brand when bourbon wasn't as strong as it is now, building it up to be large enough a big brand would come calling to buy it, continuing to run it as his own, combined with all of the innovation that so many have copied, including the big Heritage Brands all comes together to make Trey Zoeller a living legend in the bourbon world.
