No. 40

Over the last few weeks, the major tech companies announced new/updated devices. Gadgets dominate the tech news cycle during this time of year; it's the natural order of things as we head into the (Western) holiday season.

Consumers will consume — and for the most part, what we consume is hardware. But the cycle is slowing down as we hit peak smartphone. (I don't know many adults who don't own one. Do you?) Even Apple, whose revenue has thus far depended mostly on hardware sales, is shifting towards selling services.

Organizations are seeking to differentiate themselves through their digital experiences. As a result, we can expect their information environments will become more central to their overall value proposition than they are today. Mass appeal requires that these systems be useful, usable, and coherent. It requires information architecture.
