PATIO CHRISTENING!!!

... and ICE CREAM SOCIAL
When:  Wednesday, June 29 at 3pm.
Where: Art Center Patio

Join us for an old-fashioned ice cream social and mingle with your fellow artists. Stick around for a brief 10-minute General Meeting at 4:00pm that will bring all members up to date on what's new with MBAA.
From the President’s Desk
We all know that being a member of the Morro Bay Art Association is a remarkable deal!  The reason it's such a good deal is that we are an all-volunteer organization.  Since 1951, we've been able to keep our annual dues ridiculously low and the commission is still only 20% on any piece that is sold.  I can't think of any other gallery that compares - our Art Center is a real gift for artists and the community!

MBAA does all the advertising.  Your Board of Directors keep the building in good repair and cleaned every week. We check the email, pay the bills, produce the newsletter and set up the demonstrations each month.  We schedule exhibits and workshops.  We do a lot behind the scenes.  So, what part do YOU play in all this?

You can help support MBAA and keep our dues and commissions low by scheduling a few days every year to sit the gallery.  Please contact Wilma at 772-3781 to sign up.  Do it now, even if you can't sit the gallery this month or next.  It takes all of us to keep MBAA successful.

The good news this month is that gallery sales are way up! Attendance at opening receptions is way up for the third exhibit in a row.  We have a fun field trip planned in July and the patio is about to have a grand opening with two events planned: an Ice Cream social for the young at heart and for more adult fun... a Chamber mixer with free wine, beer and appetizers.  Read on to find out more.

And while you're at it, please sign up for the next Docent Training, June 11, 10AM - 12PM.  Lunch is provided by MBAA.  Come have fun, meet other members and learn how we just keep getting better!

Thank you, from all of the Board!

                          second monday demo

Monday, June 13 at 3:00pm, Art Center Activity Room

FRAMES 101 is designed for the artist who would like to try DIY framing.  Mimi Whitney-Hafft and Ron Myers will demonstrate various framing techniques.  It is suited for those new to the art world and those who have always had their artwork framed by others such as a framing store.  If this is you, then don't miss this demo.  YES, you can save money by doing it yourself!

Ron demonstrates "college framing" for gallery canvas which involves maximizing the artwork and simplifying the frame.  Ron uses exotic woods like tiger wood, walnut, and brazilian rosewood to achieve beautiful results! He'll share secrets that you won't hear from the frame shop.

Mimi has years of experience framing her own work.  She will talk about the history of framing and where to order your frames, the best style of frame to select, implements and tools of the trade, and provide some tips for good measure.  There is a handout for those who attend and a new plein air frame will be the raffle prize!

Brushstrokes 2016 is creating quite a sensation with a record-breaking attendance for our opening reception and enthusiastic reviews from all corners! This is a juried exhibition by the Painters Group, with works selected by international juror, artist and product designer, Robert Burridge.

This is a show not to be missed!  On view through June 27.

Congratulations to Bob Rodger, winner of  “The People’s Choice” award for his “Los Osos Valley Spring” displayed in our previous show, “It’s Spring”.  Our voting box was filled to overflowing with appreciative comments from our visitors for an outstanding exhibit.  Many thanks to all you artists who made it so!

Opening June 30 in our Main Gallery will be “Lighting the Way”, showcasing the works of our exceptional cast of teachers and workshop leaders, Jason Mayer, Kathy Miller, and Diana Manseau.  This promises to be another exciting exhibition, with students, members, and community artists carrying the theme upstairs into the Russell Gallery with “Following the Light”.

Take-in for both these shows will be June 28, 10 am–2 pm, so mark your calendars!

We'll celebrate this exhibit with our first evening Opening Reception of the year on Friday, July 8, 5-8 pm, in conjunction with Morro Bay's monthly ART WALK. Come, bring your friends, meet the artists and enjoy some wine and cheese. Be among the first to see the show!

Did You Know?
Are you aware that one of the new benefits of membership is the ability to show and sell a few pieces of your work at Art in the Park without the cost of renting booth space?  YES, it's true!  This is an excellent opportunity for artists of all mediums.  Bring your photography, jewelry, sculptures, pottery, collage, watercolors, and oils.  Bring the kitchen sink... but only if you've made it into a work of art.

Beginning this year, all members who are not registered as vendors can participate in the MBAA booth at Art in the Park. Contact KC Caldwell to register.  Space is limited and on a first come, first served basis.  The MBAA booth is ideally located in the center of the park - and the only one with a purple canopy.

The next Art in the Park events are July 4th & Labor Day weekends. Register at fogcatchers@gmail.com or by calling 540-1470.
