Art Center Morro Bay

To champion art as essential to life and give our community a creative voice

From the President’s Desk

It’s November and Thanksgiving inspires friends and family gatherings!  With holidays right around the corner, The Winter Faire and Craft Show reception seems to be the perfect time for unveiling the new Art Center Morro Bay mural!  Please stop by and celebrate with us.

Thank you Sandra Pendell, Planet San, of 97.3/107.9, The Rock Radio!  We appreciate your time and the platform you afforded Sam Peck and myself to share about the exhibit, "Social Justice and Dark Corners".  The social issues encompassed within this exhibit are so timeless.  Our community of artists have been grateful for the opportunity to express their innermost emotions through art and dialog.  We are happy to have partnered with you in our efforts to be of service to the community.

Joan Fee, the MBAA Docent Director, arranged a spectacular “Docent Tea”, while providing updates and training.  Joan made just about everything herself.  All of the docents in attendance went home with one of Joan’s beautiful potted succulent arrangements!

Liz Moore, the MBAA Youth Education Director, is working closely with Morro Bay High School.  Student programs include preparation for a local art exhibit, scholarships and a trip to the Getty!  Meet this term’s student interns, Mikayla and Zoe as they work with docents, board members and learn to hostess the upcoming reception.

Watch for 2018 workshops posted on the Art Center Morro Bay website.  Brady Cabe will give an indoor/outdoor photography workshop, From Camera to Computer, focusing on nature.  Exploration of Abstract Painting by Krista Harris is full and a wait list has been established.  Start to Finish Collage with Page Graeber, Portraits in Pastel by Cuong Nguyen, with live models, will concentrate on varied skin tones.  Debra Joy Groesser will give a plein aire workshop in oil.  All of these workshops are designed for beginner to advanced students.

Some of our volunteers work tirelessly behind the scenes during take-in, hanging exhibits, making artist and wall tags, arranging display cases, hostessing receptions and demos, and watering outdoor plants.  Thank you, Marty Azevedo, Kelly Clark, Colleen Ray, Sharon Westray, Gail Martin, Leslie Parsons, Trudy Calandra, Bob Rodger, Barbro Bond, Kelly Clark, Margareta Lund, Ascension Nelson, Linda Roletti, Nancy Johnson, Charm Kaiser, Sylvia Arnold-Hill, Shirley Horacek, Robin Mize, Carolyn Chambers, Ann Brown, Marilyn Miller, Hallie Weiser, James McDonald, Park Merrill, Kathleen Van Hyfte, Susan Jonas, Jamie Carpenter, Travis Newton and Scott Douglass.  A special thanks to Jan French for sharing her graphic art skill.

We must bid a fond farewell to MBAA Membership Director, Juliana Morse.  Before preparing a move to the State of Washington, Juliana has been instrumental in educating the Board of Directors, on the potential effectiveness a database program could lend to streamlining work and adding efficiency.  We will miss Juliana’s beautiful smile and wish her all the best.

Joan Fee will also leave the board as Docent Director, December 30, 2017, due to personal reasons.  Joan has been instrumental in creating an updated procedural manual for docents.   Although we will miss her, Joan will continue giving great workshops and we encourage her to return to the board in the future.

Art Center Morro Bay will be holding elections in November for the 2018 year ahead.  If you are interested in becoming a board member, please contact Lynn Douglass, 661-619-2461.

We thank you, our members, volunteers and exhibitors!

  Dianne Ravin, Gallery Director

Congratulations to Sam Peck for the “People’s Choice” Award for his stunning collection of photographs in our “Social Justice” show!
This award allows the winning artist to enter a future show with all entry fees waived.

Next on our Show Calendar

 -  Is our “Annual Winter Faire and Juried Craft Show”, November 2 – January 8, 2018. This show is always a favorite for among our holiday visitors, artists, and local gallery guests, consisting of a wide variety of paintings, photographs, sculpture, and fine crafts. We hope to see your artful submissions in this show to make it an extraordinary and festive holiday event!

-  As we have the good fortune (and some hard-working Board members!) to be in a position where our big building maintenance issues have been addressed & taken care of, we have no need to shut down the gallery over the holidays.  This means that the gallery will stay open, your work on display and available for sale all the way through January 8, 2018. The gallery will be closed only on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

-  Take-In for the Winter Faire is October 31,10 am – 2 pm, with an Opening Reception on Sunday, November 5th, 2pm-4pm.  Bring your friends and family, meet with fellow artists and potential holiday shoppers. It adds a little something extra (like incentive to close a sale!) when the purchaser gets to know the artist!  As usual, this event is free and open to the public.

October Docent Tea and Training

On October 19th, Docent Director, Joan Fee, hosted a wonderfully charming tea and training for our dedicated Art Center Docent Team. As we entered the Art Center classroom, we were treated to a delectable feast for the eyes. The counter was filled with cookies, tea cakes, mousse cups, finger sandwiches, tea and coffee. The tables were decorated with table cloths, fall colored silk leaves, and small bowls of potted succulents. The bowls were created by Joan, as thank you gifts for each of our attending docents. We all enjoyed the treats, right down to the hand baked, heart-shaped bread for the egg salad sandwiches! Joan handed out docent appreciation gift cards, then took us all through the many changes that have been made to the procedures of sitting the docent desk. Thanks to her many hours of editing and updating, we now have a very efficient Docent Procedures Manual at the desk, and our docent desk and files have been organized and updated. It was a great afternoon with friends and a lovely way to update training for our Docent Team. If you're interested in being a part of our Docent Team, contact Art Center Morro Bay at 805-772-2504.

October Demo highlights

SOFT NUDES IN A HARD MEDIUM
ROBERT "ROSEY" ROSENTHAL

Robert "Rosey" Rosenthal is a wonderfully skilled artist who produces beautiful works with hand-carved linocuts. With a rich history in supporting and teaching the printing and etching arts on the Central Coast, Rosey and his wife, Barbara, have been involved in several businesses and art groups. They both continue to teach and create art in their home studio. For the October demo, we learned how Rosey uses a variety of soft materials to cut, carve, and create linocuts, then uses those designs to print images for a variety of uses. Our counters were filled with a wonderful array of artworks large and small, made from Rosey's original carvings. In addition, we were treated to stories of Rosey's travels, experiences in the arts, and even got a bit of an art history lesson. It was a fabulous afternoon at Art Center Morro Bay
